May be semantics, and I realize everyone's hands are different, but down to the joint is half a thumb.
I don't know that it matters for football per se, but that would explain the reaction the Giants had about it being worse than they thought.

Dude, hold firecrackers in your off hand. That way if your fingers get blown off, you can still get in a 3 point stance.
