I remember the ATL sports radio guys gushing over this guy, and how great he was going to be. He reminded me of Francouer in that the hype was always more than the substance.
Yeah, he's turned that into generational wealth, and as such, great for him. But not a generational player, as he was touted to be.

Heyward's 2016 World Series stat line: .150 batting average, .150 SLG, .150 OPS, 0 walks, 0 RBIs, 5 strikeouts.

I'll always be grateful for his contributions, he was a part of the greatest Cubs team I've ever seen.
This. He was incredibly valuable as a leader which was needed for a younger team. The speech and underperforming is what his legacy will be in Chicago, but he helped the Cubs get a ring.
Great person, disappointed at the plate, but I'll still be thankful he was there in 2016 to help calm the team down before extras.

It was done they day he showed up. A pathetic deal by the laughable losers sent them right back where they belong.

But he was never right after he got beaned in the face.
This.
He was never the same hitter after that.

To be fair, he was never the same hitter after getting hit in the face in NY.
Francouer(and by his own admission) was stubborn as a Gotdamn mule when it came to adjustments. But he adjusted enough to have a 12 yr.ML career and a lifetime pension, just like Heyward will get.

Just like you got hit in the face by deGrom’s nuts this past weekend

2 loudest moments I personally experienced at Turner Field were the Heyward homer and the Hinske playoff homer.
I was at the playoff game when Mac hit the 3-run homer off of Clemens in 2005.
The place was literally shaking.

but is he even on a roster next year?
If there’s a team out there who’s only weakness is getting runners from 2nd to 3rd base with less than 2 outs, Hayward is the man you want at the plate to get that critical slow grounder to 2nd.

Acuna slam in Game 3 of the 18 NLDS for me

Me too he was a team player and leader, I'll always respect him for that.
quote:I remember the one year Chilli Davis was the hitting coach for the Cubs he would go up to J-Hey and offer his services and J-hey would always say no - he had his own routine, and I think that's probably the case with lots of MLB-ers they have their own routine and own hitting guru's or whatever and often don't use the teams hitting coach.
With that said, he was an enigma at the plate.
I just used to wonder if someone ever pulled him aside and said "J-Hey, you ground out to second about half of all of your at bats, there's a reason that keeps happening, can you let us sit down with you and figure it out so we can fix it?"
Obviously never happened.

Yes, he was! The Cardinals wanted him back, but the Cubs made a big offer.
Cards offered as much but he said he didn't want to be around aging talent like Molina, Wainwright and Pujols. Well guess who's still playing and in first place

I remember his first hit too, but as a Cubs fan. I can say this, he contributed a lot to that '16 team, as a leader and in the field. That team did not need his bat, but he was never consistent as a Cub at the plate.

Pujols was long gone when heyward rolled into town, and the current cardinals probably miss on either goldy or arenado if they are paying heyward

He took less to come to the Cubs than what the Cardinals offered.

Jason Heyward, the Mike Hampton of hitters

The Heyward signing has to be one of the more consequential moves in the history of the cubs/cards rivalry. That contract was an absolute albatross around the neck of the cubs, and on the flip side the cardinals were spared the same. The cubs felt compelled to play Heyward, largely blocking any opportunity for Jorge Solar, Eloy Jimenez or Schwarber to get enough OF playing time with the cubs.
In the end it may not have really mattered because Bryant, Baez, Addison Russell, Schwarber all went for future stars to bums.
But man. What an awful, awful signing.
Between Heyward and pujols the cardinals got a healthy dose of luck in avoiding those long term deals.

Yeah the 18 inning game is still the stuff of nightmares.
