Well, yeah. The A's went after college pitchers who were nearly ready for the Majors instead of the high risk/reward of high school pitchers. Teams used to draft a lot more high school pitchers and sign them to pretty big money. The A's chose a risk-averse method of guys nearly ready for the Majors who weren't quite as sought after (and wouldn't need quite as much cash).
Sure, there was good fortune. Every good team has had good fortune, but it was also a direct result of a plan that few other teams were executing at the time.

For those who simply saw the movie and didn't know anything about the 2002 Oakland A's, this was misleading. Those guys don't even get mentioned. Zito won the Cy Young. Their pitching was ridiculous.
