He was good enough to win championship games and bring all the trophies home

If Bobby Bowden got to play for the MNC every 1 loss regular season he would probably have more titles than Saban

Are you trying to argue against an LSU championship just because you don’t like the coach that one it now.

The era has certainly helped him.

Under the old poll system Saban would have less than half his titles.

The Old Bear got some dubious titles too (split with a USC team that beat them in Birmingham in 1978), but overall agree. Even as the 1990s Saban wouldn't have had many of the titles he's been granted

He's just being honest.

Under the strictly Poll system 1936-1998.

LSU would have the same amount of Titles and Saban would have 1 less. (LSU is the undisputed champ in 2011 and USC is the undisputed champ in 2003.)

That's just for LSU...add in the other years and lack of undefeated seasons (which the Polls loved more than anything else before the eye-test) and Saban is more like Bobby Bowden and less like Knute Rockne.

Agree with all if this.

Mist overrated shite to ever drop from an anus.

The guy is a snake oil salesman and many professional football players have echoed that sentiment over the years.

Dude knew how to game the system perfectly. How the hell does he get Eddie lacy eligible?

I dated Eddie's tutor at Dutchtown and she said adamantly the kid was a rotten as they came and couldn't spell cat if you didn't provide the c and t.

She gas no idea how he passed any SAT as he couldn't pass any of his basic stuff.

Saban always had friends in high places for protection also. Guy is a fraud and has been exposed as his recruiting classes diminish and his allure fades. Swinney broke him. And this season Coach O and Auburn finished him off. That sorry arse defense has been destroyed by equal to better talent now and he is just another fraud.

One undefeated championship. A back door champ. What a chump.

No, I knew we were lucky af in 2003. UGA had gone 13-1 the year before and got nothing. Florida was also very lucky in 06 and 08. Obviously doesn't hold a candle to us in 07.

Why don’t you rattle off all the undefeated champs for me in the last 20 years, sport.

I can dig up 1000 posts and sound bites from 2010 and 2013 when Saban was “done”

Some of you fools never learn, but I can promise you this, Nick Saban has accomplished more at the university of Alabama in 12 years than the LSU program will accomplish in the time you have left on this Earth. And you were around to witness it. Puff on that

You’re right. I don’t think he is “done” but it’s hard to think that he’s as focused and good as he was 7-10 years ago. He’s also in his late 60’s.

Prettying myopic view. Almost every national championship season for every team has some lucky breaks. The fact his team has been in the position over and over and over is what's telling.

As someone else pointed out, he's almost won another 2-3 titles to go with the 6 he did.

If you think that's "luck" I'm not sure you understand the term.

Nope, 2013 is the only season he could legitimately be considered unlucky.

LSU is on the cusp of their first playoff appearance and first national championship run in about a decade and here you are still butthurt about Saban.

It was 15 years ago, let it go.

This has nothing to do with that, it's a historical discussion on the More Sports Board

Because he got let into the game. Always. When just a a few years earlier, he'd be shut out.

How many schools would've loved to have been given a higher ranking or another shot?

FSU? They won their Sugar Bowls and Orange Bowls - 7 years after being denied the National Championship after losing early to Miami or somebody else. FSU finished something like 9 straight years in the Top 4. That's 9 years with a chance to win the Natty in a playoff.

USC won 6 out of 7 of their BCS games under Carroll. They finished in the Top 4, 7 straight years. That's 7 years of getting a shot at the Natty in the playoffs.

Once you give a team another shot after shot it's a new season. Saying well, he won justifies the gymnastics to get them in is folderol because other worthy teams also won their bowl games.

CFB used to be, the regular season was the playoff...now it's totally diluted.

There's no question, the system, ESPN and how we declare a champion has totally benefited teams that have super talent but stub their toe.

2008 USC would've been playing Florida for the title under the current dynamic.

Penn State would've won the National Title in 1994; Washington in 1984. The list goes on and on...teams with a loss were at the mercy of subjectivity, teams with no loss no matter who they played were rewarded.

The fact is Saban has had ONE undefeated season and that would've not bode well if he coached Bama in the 80's and 90's as usually only undefeated teams won the National Title.
