re: Is Louisiana Tech a Sleeping Giant?

Well, Tech's already a hell of a school. Let's not ignore ULL as a national university either, because their computer science program is awesome. I wouldn't look at Tech as some sort of "threat" to LSU academically either, but more of a partner, as the current LSU chancellor has recognized. One thing to be said of Tech is that the administration is EXTREMELY efficient and they've invested what little money they've had, damn well.
Athletically? Well, I'm a big Tech fan and booster, and I see the huge potential, but I'm not going to say we're there just yet. We have a lot of work to do, but we've had to deal with a pitiful athletic administration for a decade until now. We have spent over $76 million trying to improve our facilities in the past 2 or 3 years, and are dumping $20 million on our football stadium now. The new practice facilities are going up once we clear out some old dorms we don't use anymore that are in the way, and we're building a brand new softball stadium within a year or two. New videoboards are going up in the Thomas Assembly Center as well. The future is pretty bright now that the new administration has motivated the billionaire alumni we have, and people like Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson have stepped up now. Did you know Jimmy Johnson actually helped us hire Coach Dykes?
We're already pretty much up there academically, and the cooperation will help LSU and Tech both grow together as anchors of North and South Louisiana, with ULL's niche programs growing too. Academically, I WANNA say we're going to be a threat, and we are the most likely team in the state to make noise outside of LSU, but honestly we just have to see in a few years. LSU fan support exploded in North Louisiana in 2003 and the apathy in our program had disheartened people sooooo badly that it's going to take more success to pack the stadium consistently again. I think it can happen, and I'm doing every single thing I can to make sure it does, but we'll just have to see. There's plenty of talent and there are plenty of resources in Louisiana to support two major programs in the future anyway, so I can fathom a LaTech and LSU competing to make each other better. That would keep some of the big-time recruits home that normally are leaving for B-12 and other SEC schools and enhance Louisiana football even more. I'm sure casual fans in North Louisiana would like to have a local major team too.
Okay I just rambled on like crazy. Athletically we have big potential and will shock people in the next few years, but it remains to be seen just how far we will be able to get for the long haul.
(Okay 4 or 5 UL-X fans on here, flame away.)

No, I agree. I have always thought of Tech as a program that has never reached its potential. I think if Tech can make the move to the next level in program, I think they can be relevant on the national scene (at least on some level). I just mean that to be considered as a 'sleeping giant', you need to be in a BCS conference. All small conference teams will have a ceiling. Boise is a rare exception.
The other gal got offended when I said it could be a Fresno type program. However, I think that is realistic to strive to be, as a football program. It will take baby steps. Of course, Fresno is not an elite program, but over the past 10 years has been a very good small conference program.

No need for us UL-Xers to flame, you're doing just fine on your own. I admire your loyalty though.

genuine, I've read your LT flame attempts before and this isn't your best work.

ehidal1, I agree with you. Can Tech be a powerhouse one day? Possibly, but not tomorrow. Baby steps indeed, but as long as we take those steps and don't regress the way we did in the past decade, I think we'll get there. Our fans right now relate heavily to Southern Miss, so that's who we compare ourselves to right now honestly. I think they're in a similar situation to us with a similar school and town, but they've done better than we have in football now for a while. I'll be happy if we can somewhat emulate them first, and then see if we can get to that next level like say a Boise, Louisville, TCU, or Utah. Southern Miss or Fresno State level first... I think we've only teased that level thus far.

One of the funniest lines Ive ever read on here.

It was a compliment to say that La Tech could become a Fresno State type program. Fresno has been relevant in college football for quite a while now, considering they are in a small conference.
We are in the same conference as Fresno. They lead the series 6-3. Here are the scores:
28-38 (at Fresno)
13-45
6-16 (at Fresno)
28-21
40-28 (at Fresno)
27-34
6-17 (at Fresno)
38-35
28-30 (at Fresno)
Avg score: 24-29
About the same in Basketball. We are probably .500 with them. We have the better record in women's basketball. They are better than us in baseball.
We feel they are already our peer, not something we aspire to be. Boise has the football program we aspire to have, but they are terrible in the other sports.

I just look forward to evening up that record against Southern Miss. That's EASILY the most anticipated series for Tech fans. Gawd, I can't wait to see the Golden Eagles at our red-out game this year, brother! They did some serious damage to us record-wise back in the day! There's no reason we should have a winning record versus Alabama and a VERY losing record against Southern Miss, haha. That will definitely help replace our Battle of the Bone with Fresno if we stop playing them after this season.

You don't aspire to win national titles? Fresno's baseball title puts them ahead of Tech now.

You can believe you are Fresno State's peer all you want, but the national perception is that they are a level above you.

Well I didn't say that at least in my post. I'd say a Fresno or Southern Miss type of consistency is what I think Tech needs to get to in the next couple years or so at least. Also baseball is something I'd personally like to see improve, because I love baseball.... BUT I think Tech's possible "niche" would be football and basketball for now. Those are the money sports anyway, but it's where we have the most history. I wouldn't turn down a regional appearance for the Diamond Dawgs though.

Fresno beats alot of BCS teams OOC then loses about 3 conference games every year. Their perception comes from beating Colorado, Wisonsin, Illinois, etc.. They do very well OOC, but there is not much difference between Tech and Fresno in football.

This made this thread just look like a blatant flame attempt, but who knows. I haven't heard of that either.

LSU is by far the best public school in the state and no one is going to ever pass them.
I will admit though they are easily the second best and have a lot of potential to continue to improve and grow.
LaTech just needs to put an end to ULL unfairly trying to take over the University of Louisiana School System. That is the one of the most bull shite moves I have ever seen.

Stro, I am just yanking some chains here and it looks like it worked. I knew the resident Tech fans on this board would take up the cause and carry my water for me. I'm here to stimulate discussion. Nothing more or less.

Tech is spending big money on campus lately but there are still too many 4 year schools in the state that hurt Tech and LSU to some degree.
Posted on 8/28/10 at 10:20 am to lsudawg70
That's why ULL and ULM need to go. They are superfluous and add nothing to the equation. Those schools contribute to the dumbing down of American higher education.
Posted on 8/28/10 at 10:23 am to lsudawg70
the best Tech can ever hope to be is be on par with a Southern Miss IMO. Theyve got a long way to go to even reach that. Tech Fans are on here talking about getting fan support in Ark and Texas,....slow down. yall might want to first just try to get enough support in Ruston and then move out. Shreveport/North LA is LSU country by a long shot currently and I dont see that changing. I guess I realize dreams keep people going, but come on.... Tulane, ULM, and ULL fans are all saying the same things. If yall could just get 30-40k a game and make a bowl game every 3-4 years that would be a HUGE step. baby steps
