Not that it matters in the overall picture but I'm pretty sure the #1 spectator sport in China is Basketball

I'm not surprised based on what we saw with the Olympics, but I was going from the grassroots pickup perspective. I guess that does make sense.

not really.

it's dum to suggest that the best player of the second or third most popular sport in America would even be comparable to soccer's level of popularity. You didn't even think of Africa, but it's clearly the #1 sport there as well. Even in China and India, where soccer isn't the primary sport, it is still a lot more popular than basketball.

Im not arguing that basketball is bigger than soccer. tard.

soccer could be more popular in asia, but that doesnt mean they know who Messi is. Popularity could be based simply on participation and not viewership. It has nothing to do if they know someone like Lebron. A superstar who is also a global brand.

That is what this thread is about. Not what sport is more popular.

Someone posted Messi. Good enough guess.

I am an avid soccer fan. Ronaldo is more popular than Messi. I promise you.

Seriously, though. If you think it wouldn't even be close, you're an idiot. LeBron has been the best player for a few years now in the second most popular organized sport in the world.

It isn't the second most organized sport in the world. Soccer and Cricket dwarf basketball.

STOP SAYING MESSI. IT ISN'T MESSI, ITS RONALDO.

And Cristiano Ronaldo is a brand. A huge one. So is Beckham.

This is a topic I am curious about and like to talk to foreigners about when I travel. I met an australian just the other day who was like, "I think I've heard of Lebron, what sport does he play". He said the same about Kobe. Then I asked if he knew who tiger woods was and he laughed at the question.

I would think they are even. Messi is a goofy looking guy but he is head and shoulders above Ronaldo. If you play a pickup game with a bunch of Hispanics, Messi is the name that comes up more. Ronaldo might have more of a pop culture appeal as a sex symbol and stuff. Regardless, they are the stars for pretty much the 2 most internationally popular sports clubs in the world due to Latin America.

A sport's popularity is the most important component. I have no idea who the best Cricket player in southern Asia is.

Right, but you seem dumb enough to exclude India, Korea, and Japan.

This. Bigger than many realize I think.

And why are people getting so defensive about Lebron's worldwide popularity? Absolutely, millions of people know Lebron. But the likelihood of someone outside of this continent being more familiar with Ronaldo, Messi or Tiger is probably rather high.

Cricket may be number 2 in terms of overall fans, but I don't think it has much of an international following in countries that weren't British colonies post 1900.

But yes, soccer is easily the most popular sport in the world.

I agree with you. But it comes down to 3 things for me.

1. Age. Ronaldo is a little older and has played in the 2 most popular leagues in the world. He has been considered one of the best in the world for the better part of 10 years now. Messi is a little bit younger and lived in Ronaldinho's shadow for several years. It is only in the last 2-3 years that he has been considered the best in the world (which he is).

2. Ronaldo's brand is larger than Messi's. He is a star in the most basic sense of the world. He is outgoing and outrageous on and off the pitch. Messi keeps to himself and isn't the flashy player CRon is.

3. Social media. Messi doesn't even have a Twitter. Nowadays social media extends to parts of the world that can't even watch these guys play. Ronaldo has 11M followers worldwide, second in terms of athletes only to Kaka.

It conveys the power soccer has throughout the world. Cristiano Ronaldo has almost 11 million followers. Aside from Kaka, a Brazilian soccer phenom, the next closest athlete is Shaq with 5.8M. The next highest active athlete is Lebron with 5M.

twitter followers is pretty decent data point to gauge popularity; certainly more valid than some dope who says he talks to people while overseas.
