isn't the thread title worst overall pick?

if so, then the reason why it didn't pan out for the team is pretty irrelevant... if you want a separate category for "couldn't get his head out of his arse" then I think JR looks like a very strong contender for #1

thus for anyone else to be considered a worst #1 overall pick, that player would also have to be a bust

The very first draft pick in NFL history, Jay Berwanger in 1936, never signed or played in the NFL. That is pretty hard to top as far as wasteddraft picks goes.

The NFL was a different entity back in 1936 when Jay Berwanger was drafted. Heck, the US economy was a lot different.

We'll have to ask JEAUXBLEAUX and dukke v what it was like to watch Berwanger play.

Is that a good thing seriously or would the Raiders been better off if hypothetically would have never taken a snap?

Well, by the never took a snap, could Bo Jackson be considered a bust for Tampa?

Or better question:

How sad is it that JaMarcus Russell apologists need to find guys from a different era and guys who have never taken a snap in the NFL to find worse draft picks than him?

a bust can be a good whipping boy... a good distraction from the point that the teams saddled over and over with busts are poorly run franchises

allows the ownership to avoid owning up to their lousy management or interference cause the player is there to receive abuse

Certainly teams like the Raiders, Browns, and Lions have had some players fail to meet their expectations over the years... but that's hardly a fluke... it's because those are bad organizations with bad ownership, bad management, bad coaching and player development and bad scouting

You get some failures when it comes to draft picks on good teams but they fix the problem quickly

bad scouting

not necessarily. Sometimes like with teams like the raiders the gm/owner can't be talked out of anything.

Exactly. Which is why fluke injury is not a reason to call someone a bust.

you're not a real scout, you don't have to defend the profession

I'm not. I never claimed to be. However, when you have an owner/GM like Al Davis do you really think he listens to anyone? Do you really think they were THAT into Darius Heyward-Bay? The answer is no. Al Davis just has to many yes men around him.
