Is it really that hard to hand off a baton?

Just wondering.

Yeah, its not as easy as one would think. Especially in the rain, which could mess up timing. HOWEVER, in the qualifying round you have to assure yourself of moving on and just get the damn handoff!!

At full speed and doing it within a limited exchange zone....yes. But not that hard if you practice more than a few times. And thats the problem, the U.S. rarely practices exchanges.

Would it be more similar to executing a layup or a free throw?

Well that is pretty clear for both men and women.

I ran track in HS, and our coach made the sprint (4X100) relay team practice the handoff all the time. There is a form to haning off, he really emphasised that, having the team pass the baton without looking behind them.

Bad analogy, but not a free throw. Maybe more like a perfectly execute option in football.
The key is for the the runner about to get the baton to be able to get the handoff without looking backwards and moving

It's not an easy thing to do, especially at the speeds you run in somethig like the 4x100. As someone said, it takes a lot of practice and since the US Olympic/WC teams are typically made up only a few days before competition, practice is minimal.
On a related note, Tyson Gay has got to be the biggest disappointment so far for the US.

Hmmm In many years of track on relays (5th grade - LSU), I never dropped or missed a handoff. I would say its much easier than a layup. Now I have have some pretty fricked up exchanges and bordered on going over the zone but its rare to see a drop at that level.

Isn't there a sweet pic of you getting dusted running with a baton?

Its incredibly easy.. This was a qualifying round too! MAJOR frickUP.. Its simple.. You throw your arm back and dont come back with it until you have a baton in your hand. You keep your eye on the exchange line and make sure you get the stick before you hit it. At world class speeds I would accept a zone violation over a dropped stick even in the rain with oil all over the stick there is no excuse its a major frickup.

how much of a lead did the 1st 3 legs give you?

ITs easier on the 4x400 but your coming in so fast on the 4x100 and 4x200 that it can be difficult
