Is it possible for the Celtics to do this?

I haven't done any research or anything, just a hypothetical, but could Boston do this 3 team trade and acquire Jimmy Butler and still get Gordon Hayward in free agency? If so, maybe LeBron has some serious issues to deal with and not just with Golden State

They'd probably have to dump Crowder or an Expiring Amir Johnson

Amir is already a FA but Crowder, zeller, and some small pieces would do it

Aren't those two REALLY similar players?

WOW, if true.

Not overly, no. And you can never, ever, ever have too many quality wing types.
Butler will give you much more versatile defense; Hayward far more consistent range. They attack the game differently as well, and Butler can play off guard in some lineups.
Really, its better to have a log jam at the 2/3 than anywhere else in basketball right now-- you have to have quality players there to compete.

Gordon could become your small ball 4

Jimmy + Gordon + Horford + IT4 would equal one hell of a luxury tax bill come 18'.

If they trade for Jimmy they should focus on Blake not Hayward

Griffin, oft injured, headcase. Heyward younger, some upside yet to be realized, and a better shooter right now. Griffin bigger presence inside. Hayward by a mile in today's game.

If C's deal for butler, Crowder is part of deal.
You get butler, heyward, still need a defender guard with one of those #1's. Patience. Ainge must really like IT.

In the Butler trade they have to send out 12.5 mil in salaries, and they have to let Olynyk walk, and cut Zeller, Jackson, and Mickey in order to have max cap space to sign Hayward. But, yes it is possible for them to do this and is probably what their ideal situation is right now.

If they did and they beat Cleveland next year in the playoffs...people will find some way to compare it to a super team and bitch about how unfair it was.

yes

doubt they'd be able to extend IT if that happened

Isn't that ideal?
If you have a mercurial near-max or max player, the only way to sell him walking to your fan base is to point to the pile of draft pick loot and the potential need to shake things up if you aren't competing for a title.
If things don't gel with a 3 star lineup to let them challenge the Cavs, they can say 'We need to do something major for our future'-- and they'll have a pile of assets to do it.

They have the draft capital to replace some of that talent if they lost it. Unless they have it all up for Butler

I don't think extending IT to a max is in bostons long term plan if they can get some big time players
IT is almost impossible to trust in big time series bc of his defense
