I'm watching a documentary on the strike shortened '95 season and the pure number of greats playing then so overshadows anyone in the game today. I know interest in baseball isn't what it used to be but maybe that's partially because the talent and personalities aren't what it used to be.

Who do we have today that might measure up to Manny Ramirez, Randy Johnson, Griffey Jr, Maddox/Glavine/Smoltz, Frank Thomas, Edgar Martinez, Tony Gwynn, Barry Larkin, Don Mattingly, Hideo Nomo, Cal Ripkin Jr, Barry Bonds, Kirby Puckett, and on and on. I'm not just talking about stats I'm talking about draw. I'll drive to Dallas or Houston to see a game but there's no player since Jeter that I will make a special trip to see. Who's the next great draw?

Trout and Harper are my currents

I feel Adley Rutschman Jack Leiter, and Bobby Whitt, Jr have the best chance of the rookies/2nd year guys.

You made special trips to see Mattingly, Jeter and Hideo Nomo? Maybe you just personally don’t like baseball anymore

Ohtani is the obvious answer and exponentially more impressive and exciting than a lot of the players you named

I think Shohei Ohtani has the potential - he's doing something nobody has ever really done save for who...Babe Ruth? If the Angels ever go to Atlanta that's the type of game I'd drive over to see just to say I saw him play...Add Mike Trout being on the same team and that's something pretty damn special to see imo.

*ETA*
Apparently the Angels are coming to Atlanta in July, but it's a month before my wife is due so probably won't get to make it

The question was about American players but Ohtani is already there for sure as far as a "face of the league"

They'll be there the weekend after the ASG

Speaking of American players is Lacy in the big leagues?

Will someone draft Rocker before the 3rd this year?

Derek Jeter?

For fricks sake.

There a two kinds of individual draws to travel to watch baseball.

1) a dominant stirikeout artist
2) a power hitter who can hit all over the field.

Jeter was neither of those.

If Trout played for the Yankees this wouldn’t be a conversation.

I wanted to see the Rocket every time he was either in Arlington or Kansas City, and I knew he was pitching.

I think he was the best Pitcher I ever saw personally, saw him play vs Arkansas, in the CWS, and MLB.

I do not remember many of the Pitchers I watched the Cards play against. I know I saw Gooden and Lee Smith, but cant recall any that stand out

Might just be the Braves homer in me but Ronald Acuna is pretty special.

I assumed OP meant American baseball as in MLB. Shohei Ohtani was discussed too...

Derek Jeter is so overrated it's not funny. Check every hitting and fielding metric. Dude is good but not great. He shouldn't be in the HoF, much less be considered an all time great.
