Yes he is. Bullpen management is key. He's got a Whitey Herzog level feel for it.

He also destroyed Jake Arrieta's development when he was with the Orioles. It's pretty easy to see why he's been fired three times even though his strategic acumen is truly second to none.

I don't know if that was more of an organizational philosophy or what, but not letting a young pitcher throw his best pitch and altering his delivery is pretty astounding.

what maddon did in TB is pretty amazing. He took some mediocre rosters pretty deep. But, Theo built these cub teams. A lot of managers could take them where they need to go, but Maddon is perfect for the job

Bochy is great too. He is the best. He did have the benefit of Cy caliber pitchers (Cain Lincecum mad bum) and an MVP in the lineup (posey). He's made everything else work around those guys

who understands baseball knows that lineups don't matter so Dusty was actually right in that regard.

I think the differences have been proven to be pretty small, but they exist. Dusty batting Zack Cozart 2nd (when he was running .280 OBPs) in front of Votto years back may not have been a huge thing, but it was still decidedly stupid.

Though I think Dusty has been fantastic for the Nats this year, he's still up to some of his old tricks. Watching every game, he still has "fast dudes that don't get on base should lead off"-itis, works his starters really deep (110-120 pitches), and has overworked a very talented bullpen arm (Rivero) into the dumpster by pitching him in over half the games.

Overall, I'm enjoying him. Anything beats Matt Williams.

The difference between the most optimal and least optimal lineups in the National League is about 29 runs or about 3 wins a season. That's with the worst lineup construction possible with pitchers batting first or second and all of the best hitters batting in the bottom of the lineup. When you consider the fact that Zack Cozart is a much better hitter than a typical pitcher and it's just one spot in a nine place batting order, the impact on the win-loss record is completely negligible.

Dusty seems like a dreadful tactical manager, but he seems good at all the other stuff, like motivating players. Hard to quantify any of this though.

People keep talking about Maddons time at Tampa is better than Bochys time at SD.

Ok, so where/what/when has Maddon outperformed Bochy's time at San Fran?

Yes, WS matters. Winning matters.

Does Maddon look smarter ? Hells yes.
Does he manage a big league club better than Bochy? I don't think so.

Regardless, I would love for either one of them to replace AJ Hinch.

Bochy is undoubtedly more accomplished. But since baseball playoffs are pretty much a crapshoot and the manager's impact is already likely pretty marginal, I don't think WS wins necessarily prove he is a more skilled manager.

There is really no way to answer this question and if anyone thinks they can definitely answer this question, they probably overrate their abilities. Not that there is anything wrong with taking a stab at it.

Yeah the front office's impact is much greater than the manager. The difference between the best and worst MLB manager is pretty minimal overall

It's very true. And Hinch probably isn't the worst as much as y'all hate him. His impact on the game is minimal

I don't know about this. Ive absolutely seen a difference between a good manager and a bad one, especially when it comes to late-game bullpen and PH decisions.

Clearly these "the managers don't make a difference" people have ever watched a Reds game.

There's a difference but I don't think it's worth more than a few wins a year

If Maddon were managing the Reds what do you think their record would be?
