If you get flagged for it, the ball is placed where the grounding took place and you lose a down.

If you don't ground it, you are down in the same location and you lose a down. Same difference.

The grounding does not count as a sack and the lost yards are not counted in the stats.

If they’re trying to protect the qb, they should let him throw it anywhere. Why make the poor bastard run outside the box?

It needs to be a call because if they didn’t call it as a penalty then their is no incentive not to “ground” the ball.

Wrong

It is a penalty (foul)

It results in a 10 second run off under 1 minute in either half

Thus. Foul.

They ought to make it a five yard penalty from the spot of the foul and the play should count as a sack.

lol...sure it is. Otherwise, you could just throw an incomplete pass.

Was just saying this.

Should be a 5 yard penalty, spot foul, loss of down.

If it wasnt called it would be an incompletion with no yardage lost. The yardage lost needs to be accounted for, thus a penalty called.

And if you don’t get flagged for it, the ball is placed ahead of that spot. Therefore, it’s a penalty.

My point is that there is no down side to grounding (assuming you do not throw a pick) You might be lucky enough to get the incompletion. QBs ground the ball to avoid sacks with a few exceptions such as stopping the clock as others have mentioned. If you get called for the grounding, you are in the same situation as you would be if there was a sack.

That is the penalty.

If not...the ball goes back to the line of scrimmage.

Not if you did it to avoid a sack which is the majority of the time.

Quarterback takes the snap, is chased back thirty yards, and just tosses the ball a yard when he realizes he can’t get that first. Let’s only put him five yards back instead of thirty.

Go back to your wanking thread.
