Maddux had more really good years but Pedro's best years>>>>>Maddux best years

Maddux > Pedro
1992 20-11 2.18 ERA
1993 20-10 2.36
1994 16-6 1.56
1995 19-2 1.63
Maddux had a 1.97 ERA over 4 seasons and led the league in innings pitched each of those years. That's insane! this might be the most dominant 4 years in the history of pitching.

Yes but they're all basing this on one season. By that logic, Brady Anderson is one of the greatest homerun hitters of all time.

In 1995 Maddux went 19-2 1.63....you can't really have a better season.
Posted on 8/3/12 at 3:39 am to motorbreath
For that season, do you have K's per 9 innings and BB's per 9 innings?

again, i don't have a certain answer, but that does nothing to convince me. nolan ryan threw a ton of no hitters and he is assuredly not the greatest pitcher ever.
But that's a moot point anyways because, unlike Ryan, Koufax won a ton of games and didn't have a ton of walks.

Doc Gooden for a little while was awesome.

Maddux is insane but he still falls well short of Pedro's best years(97, 99, 00, 02, and 03)
92-26 W/L 2.03 ERA .908 WHIP
Lead MLB in ERA all 5 years
Lead MLB in WHIP 4 of the years
Lead the AL in K/9 all 5 years
and did this during an extreme hitters era, and in a hitters ballpark.

*Strike shortened season and Pedro in 2000 is better

He still pitched over 200 innings that season.
And Pedro in 2000 was not better.

Even if we don't count the shortend season against Maddux, Pedro's 2000 is still better, so is his 99.

Hey kids, in 1930 and 1931 Lefty Grove had WHIPs of 1.144 and 1.077 for 290 innings a year.
I'll let y'all look up how the AL was batting in those years.

Pedro Martinez had a WHIP of .737 in 2000

I cannot even imagine how difficult it was to pitch in Fenway during the steroid era. It's a nightmare as is.
Is that before or after Josh Beckett bullies you and takes your fried chicken and sulks.

quote:I wanted to agree with you, but after I looked at the numbers I guess all I can say is that statistically Pedro Martinez was better. And I fricking hate Pedro Martinez and love Greg Maddux.
This thread derailed and missed a valuable point: Maddux > Pedro
Here we go:
Greg Maddux (23 year career) 5,008 1/3 IP 3.16 ERA 132 ERA+ 3371 K/999 BB 1.143 WHIP
Pedro Martinez (18 year career) 2827 1/3 IP 2.93 ERA 154 ERA+ 3154 K/760 BB 1.054 WHIP
There are probably a lot more sabremetrics I'm not aware of, but at least on the surface it appears that Pedro was better. TBH, it's splitting hairs.

This is for all the idiots in this thread, of which there are a lot. First, taking certain drugs don't have to make you big. Second, the fricking steroid era wasn't just the hitters. Some people can't get that thru their thick skulls. Third, Pedro threw extremely hard during the steroid era, then broke down. Finally, well I rest my case.

If you are implying that Pedro took PED's, I have to agree.

That's the kind of thing that makes me wonder about a guy like Grady Sizemore. Dude can never stay healthy.
