Great ERA means great pitcher. BUT, if the ERA isn't as good as who I'm trying to compare to, let me make up some excuses.

I understand your ERA argument, but it is definitely not black and white. Playing on a better defensive team will cut down your ERA as guys chase down hits and throw out would-be runs. K's have to be in the discussion as well.

I do agree that W's and L's are fricking irrelevant.

One of the dumber things in sports IMO. I can't think of a major sport where the dimensions of the field change depending on the venue. Asinine.

WTF!!!!!! Thats one of the best things about baseball.

Greg Maddux won 18 gold gloves including 13 in a row.

Pedro won 0

GM is with out a doubt the GOAT fielding pither to ever play the game.

So Ryan Volegsong is the best pitcher in baseball right now?

Going by ability alone, no. He's definitely top 10 IMO, but not the best.

By performance this year, he has been the best.

See, maybe in the bullpen, but I don't measure how good a pitcher is by how many guys they can K.

THIS season who would you rather have?

Player 1:

ERA: 2.22
K: 95
IP: 129 2/3

Player 2:

ERA: 3.12
K: 154
IP: 121 1/3

So, you're telling me because player 2 has more strikeouts that you would rather have a pitcher that has given up almost 1 more run per 9 innings?

People in this thread are missing a very important fact in this thread. Pedro pitched in the AL where you don't have 3-4 automatic outs like the NL. If people don't think that's a big deal then they are out their minds. Not only did Pedro pitch in the AL, but Fenway has been the best AL hitters park for over a century.

Since we are talking about Pedro and Maddox best 7 consecutive years. One interesting note, excluding Pedro's own seasons, his seven-year cumulative 213 ERA+ is better than the individual league leader's ERA+ in all but eight years since the end of World War II (Bob Gibson 1968, Dwight Gooden 1985, Greg Maddux 1994 and 1995, Kevin Brown (!) 1996, Roger Clemens 1997 and 2005 and he tied Clemens 1990). So in 119 seasons in which Pedro did not lead the league in ERA+, only eight times did someone exceed his seven-year average.

That's pretty insane!
