Yeah, Frisco team is 5 years old now. Tearing up TRU so far this year. This is my 2nd year with Frisco, played with DARC and Shreveport previously.
Yeah, the Tongans still play with Arlington (now calling themselves Grand Prairie). They formed their own team, Texas Islanders, that lasted for 2 seasons. They folded after the club was suspended for fighting and playing ineligible players. Surprising huh?!

Lax is huge in Maryland. I mean, huge. Everyone plays. It's bigger than football. The best attended NCAA event? The lacrosse final four. Not basketball, not even a bowl game. But the three day extravaganza of lax in Baltimore. Lacrosse is pretty big in Long Island and Massachusettes as well. Other than that? Just small pockets around the nation, usually where private schools are big.
That's cool. I've watched the champ game a few times on ESPN and it seems like a really fun sport to play. Glad kids in this area have that opportunity that we didnt have

I'd say there's a pretty good chance in my lifetime. I'm only 25 and I can definitely see it happening.

I don't think you realize how popular baseball is. The Dodgers are looking at getting paid $6-7 Billion dollars for 3rd TV rights. 1/4 of billion fans attended professional baseball games the last two years.

No. Freaking. Way.
Good to hear about the Frisco side.
DARC's always been a decent side. I remember when they first formed as a combination of Dallas Our Gang and the Dallas Blues.

There was probably a betting pool going around on how long they would last.
DARC had a good run when I was there, went to Final 4 in D3 my last year there. They are struggling now.

Lol, you are older than I am.

I understand how popular baseball is, but I'm also looking 50 years down the road. Soccer didn't start to catch on in the US until roughly 1990? So we're about on year 22? The age group of people that grew up with soccer is probably younger than 35? As the stats show, the MLS in its 16th season already has attendance levels on par with the NHL and NBA. In my view we're about 3 years into the second generation of soccer in the US.

after looking at this map and seating capacity of each stadium in, the avg of 17800 is not that impressive when most stadiums hold at least 20000 .
Here you go
Based on capacity:
quote:
87% average attendance across the league, up from 79.5% last season.
And this is with teams playing in larger shared venues. Still gets them pretty close to

Remember, the NBA and NHL are both hovering around 90% average attendance, but every team has their own stadium
So when more soccer specific stadiums keep popping up, it will help that number even more

It would be the "street" sports of basketball and soccer
And if it happens, then the Golden Age of American Sports will have come to an end

I love arbitrary start dates, but no. Ever hear of the New York Cosmos and the NASL? The Cosmos were huge. Like, sell out the Meadowlands huge. Founded in 1971, folded in 1985, probably reached its peak in popularity around 1977. That's when they fielded a lineup of Pele, Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, and Franz Breckenbauer.
Soccer's been around America for a long time. If the NASL was founded in 1971, we're nearing in on the 50 year mark of soccer trying to become a major sport in the US.

41 is nearing 50?
I get your point and agree to some extent, but there are things in the world today (cable, internet, etc) that didn't exist back then which has created more soccer fans.
However, if MLS wants to become legit, they need to start getting the Henrys and Beckhams of the world in their early to mid 20s instead of their mid to late 30s.

Yes, I know about the NASL. The MLS learned from the NASL mistakes, which is why it's growing in popularity. When I mentioned the early 90s, it was in reference to youth leagues. Even during the NASL days, you didn't see the youth movement in that happened in the 90s.

As George Will said soccer has the most potential for growth of any sport inAmerica, but it has been that way for the last 40 years.

If I was back in highschool I would play either soccer or lacrosse, depending on my physical size

Which is why I'm still having major doubts about soccer becoming big.

That will take a little more time. That's one thing that killed the NASL. They threw a ton of money at top players and went bankrupt. The MLS has a very low salary cap and is raising it as the league grows financially.
