If football goes the way of boxing due to rule changes, what sport gets big?

Let me cross out what won't get big:
*anything violent like MMA, boxing, kickboxing, etc.
*NASCAR--not a sport
*HOCKEY---too regional
*LACROSSE
Here are the 3 that could legitimately replace football 20-25 years from now: (in no particular order)
1. Basketball----Here are the pros: huge college presence, is played nationwide, is international, is an olympic sport.
However, the cons are that the Pro league is terribly run, you need freakish tall people to play (thus 5'9-6'3 white kids and their $ can't play in most cases). Interest is just not there by a lot of people. Also, the fact that US born caucasians never make the all star game really hurts interest.
2. BASEBALL----Pros: Used to be the largest sport, is still very huge in the US, major cities like NY, LA, and Boston are huge into baseball, has many players from many different races, is one of the top sports for latinos who are the largest growing population in the country. Decent college presence.
Cons: The college presence and HS presence is regional, $ is needed to really hone skills in many cases, sport is slow to many, not big international presence.
3. SOCCER----Pros: most popular sport in world, fastest growing sport in US, popular with latinos like baseball, many different body types can play.
Cons: Very poor HS and College presence nationwide. Same weather restrictions as baseball, sport is slow to many just like baseball.
I think baseball and soccer have similar cons. However, the popularity of soccer and simpleness of playing it in backyards would probably make it the biggest sport in the US in 25 years.
I still think baseball will be going strong as a solid #2 though.

MEH. What separates it from the football injuries that our society is getting so wound up about?
However, I can definitely see it getting HUGE with the American populace.
The only thing, is I don't see it being big enough on a HS and college level in just 20-25 years though.

Basketball. It's already huge and can you imagine the level of competition down to even the DIII level?

I think it will be basketball and soccer because of the cost. Baseball is too expensive now.

Too late. MMA is already huge in this country....only going to get bigger
Soccer will pass baseball within our lifetime. Baseball will only go down, while soccer will only go up

Rule changes killed boxing? I thought it was pay per view and fighters ducking fights/fighting once a year that killed boxing.

Soccer has been the sport of the future for 30 years. Maybe it will pass baseball, but I kind of doubt it.
What people underrate about soccer is that it has a distressingly high injury rate as well. It's not head injuries, so that's good, but if a soccer tournament is coming to your town, avoid the local emergency rooms that weekend. Hell, I played hockey and lacrosse, and the sport in which I suffered a horrific knee injury was soccer.

The Laws of the Game are designed to:
1) Promote safety
2) Maintain the flow of the game

Youth rugby is one of the fastest growing sports out there, and with the sevens version of the game being in the 2016 Olympics, it can blow up.

I don't think it's a very big if.
With all the lawsuits and head injuries coming out couples with the rule changes that are pissing fans off, I think it's inevitable that football will eventually go the way of boxing.
either that or it will be very different as we see it today. Like flag, 7 on 7, or even going back without headgear.

I don't think that it would be very different.
I think that we'll see some rules and equipment changes that make it less dangerous over the next few years.
A great first step would be to mandate wrapping up in tackles.

part of me agrees with you, but the other part of me thinks that the football fans who are looking for a new sport will go to baseball before soccer.

I never said rule changes killed boxing. I'm just saying that football in popularity will go to a spot similar to boxing. i.e. nobody would give a shite.

Very true. I think if Selig gets out of the way , that baseball is poised for a HUGE comeback. I don't care about equipment costs, that didn't stop football from being popular.
