I hate Notre Dame but....

Some of these "pundits" i.e. Colin Cowherd shouldn't kid themselves.
There are a lot of coaches that would want to go to Notre Dame.
We were catching the same hell in 2006 after firing Mike Shula. People scoffed at the mention of Saban.

You only got Saban because you bought him. After he took the money then he made up the story that his heart was still in college ball. Congrats on getting him. But it is what it is.

He took a pay cut to coach at Alabama. Logic is absent from your post.

A lot of coaches want to go to Notre Dame... just not coaches already at power programs

We invested in him and boy did that ever turn out to be a good investment. He paid for his contract in season ticket and logo revenues the first two years he was here.
You can call it buy or you can call it invest but whichever it was the steal of the century.

Saban was drowning at Miami. His ego was taking a beating and he clutched the opportunity to return to college football. The school could have been Nebraska, Florida State, or Texas A$M. He wasn't in love with Bama as much as he was looking for dry land to save him from drowning.

Yeah, but it still took record millions to get him. And he made up his best story to benefit the situation. Doesn't everybody do this?
It is what it is. He's the Larry Brown of College Football. Congrats to Bama for getting him for a few years.

You backpedal better than Peterson.

Agree. No matter what people say (or how much they hate them) ND is a top job. The Irish aren't going to screw up this hiring.

I think it had less to do with money than his injured ego. He came to LSU for money, went to Miami for $, power and the NFL (He wanted to prove to the world how great he was) he then went to Bama to save his ego. Another 4-12 season at Miami and he struggles to get a good job anywhere. Bama was a good fit for timing.

Really?
LSU wasn't a better job than Sparty? You don't think he'd rather be in the SEC? You think Louisiana/Texas might be a better recruiting ground than Michigan?

I realize the draw of Notre Dame with the national exposure and the tradition, but what makes South Bend a place easy to recruit? They obviously didn't have enough success under Weis who has recruited very well according to the ranking services. What coach would think he could improve upon this? With their academic requirements and the new trend to want to play for the "it" schools like Florida and USC it's hard to see Notre Dame having great success for a while.

That was part of it, but it also came along with a hefty payraise.

Ok, so I'm waiting on the bad part of leaving East Lansing.
I'm having a hard time buying that Saban was out for the money grab.
It's becoming harder to tear down any of Saban's moves.

Any coach would take the chance to restore ND to their past years. They were dominant in the 80s and 90s. They have stunk it up since then, but imagine the adulation the coach will get from the billionaire boosters and the media that can restore them to a power.

I think that most would indeed do as you say, however, I think that the super power coaches in very good spots (the Meyers, Stoops, etc) will pass. The adulation would indeed be great, but the chances of it happening are way too slim for them to risk their legacies. ND doesnt sell itself like it used to, and half of the kids it does sell itself to wouldnt see the field at UF or Oklahoma. The Brian Kelly's of the world however, would see it as a vertical career move and a chance to get that adulation.

ND actually wont be that good of a spot after both Golden Tate and Jimmy Clausen leave for the NFL draft

How did this turn into a Saban thread?
I like what Tony Dungy said to ND
