You're right, but the announcers always talk about whether someone should do it or not. Its like the free kick fair catch no rush FG attempt. Has it happened in the past 2 or 3 (or more) decades? Nonetheless, watch enough football and you'll hear it mentioned a handful of times each season.

They could have called it, but what would it have done. The penalty is not going to put time on the clock. Holding in the endzone is enforced as a safety.

Saints @ 9ers a few years ago. Qb mishandled the snap, ran it down, and punched it out of the back of the endzone.
