Only in Baton Rouge. Not nationally.
I didn't live in Baton Rouge. I'm from Maryland. Shaq was considered a man amongst boys in college (with a coach who was widely considered to be incompetent and holding him back)

Owned shaq in college???
Shaq outscored him, out rebounded him, and was picked 1st in the draft

But I'm talking about for the Dream Team spot. But of course everyone knew O'Neal would be first pick. But as I said there was no discussion that Shaq was on that team.

"Duke's fans were all over Shaquille O'Neal, and so were the Blue Devils.
The sixth-ranked Blue Devils held O'Neal to a season-low 15 points and Christian Laettner had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead Duke to an 88-70 victory over No. 19 LSU Sunday at Durham, N.C.
O'Neal, the 7-foot-1, 295-pound sophomore center, came into the game averaging 27 points and leading the nation in rebounding with 15 per game. He was the target of the crowd as well as the Duke defense.
O'Neal scored only four points in the first half, sitting out more than 10 minutes because of foul trouble as LSU (15-7) fell behind. The 15 points matched his season low against Auburn and he had 10 rebounds."
Fail.

Bill Walton doesn't hate Christian Laettner
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:06 pm to LooseCannon22282
O shite. ESPN hates LSU
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:06 pm to REG861
Thats right...fricking owned Shaq. End of debate.
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:06 pm to REG861
So Laetner outscored him once, and Shaq outscored him once. And then Shaq averaged more the next two years. Yeh Laetner owned him
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:07 pm to fontell
Hey, at least LSU fans weren't chanting STTDB because that would be unclassy
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:07 pm to tigerbait3488
So eventhough Shaq outscored Him he was owned? I'm confused

Well no wonder he was less productive.
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:07 pm to lsupride87
He did own him. You do not know shite. Just stop.
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:08 pm to tigerbait3488
You were just proven wrong. Shaq outscored him once, Laetner outscored him once. You are factually wrong
Posted on 3/15/15 at 9:09 pm to tigerbait3488
Come on guys, Shaq = 4 NBA championships, Laettner 2 NCAA TitleS
Shaq>>>>>>>>>

Baloo you are wrong and you know it about that.
Nobody thought O'Neal deserved that.
I love SVP and like Baloo's point of view generally but you just have to throw it away when it comes to anything Duke related from jealous Maryland fans. Anyway, RE: Laettner vs Shaq in college you can't argue Shaq had a better shooting percentage without first admitting that is misleading.
Laettner shot fricking 48.5% from three point range for his college career. Laettne's TS% was obviously significantly better as a result of this advantage (.680 for Laetter in 91-92 vs .603 for Shaq that same year) Shaq was incredibly dominant near the rim but it took him years to develop his talent into a refined skill set.

This is sad. If it makes you feel better, go edit Shaq's wikipedia page and add Dream Team to it, if it helps you get some sleep tonight.

We talking college here....not NBA and whether Shaq deserved the Dream Team spot.

So, when Shaq was 18, and playing his first real test on the road, yeah, he played poorly:

Still, Shaq had far better stats. Go back to the comp. Shaq's numbers crush Laettner's. Laettner had the better team, so he gets the POY accolades because that's hw awards work... but the Dream Team? It was silly. Shaq was the better player.

It was like a high school gym--very loud," O'Neal said. "The crowd was a factor."
Duke (21-4) has won six consecutive games and 11 of 12.
The 6-11 Laettner scored 16 points in the first half as Duke scored the last seven points of the half for a 48-39 lead.
"He's only 18 years old," LSU Coach Dale Brown said. "He's not Superman."
