They didn't need to. They didn't play defense back then.
I prefer the old style game. It didn't take 45 minutes to finish the last 3 minutes of a game.
There have always been players who whine, or give the impression they are whining due to being unable to hide their emotions. There were fewer of them, and they weren't the star players, so they got technical fouls and learned to control themselves.

Wait. Are you arguing that the 70s style NBA game wasn't incredibly physical? It was primarily a bunch of goons walking around hitting each other. That's what made the 80s so revolutionary. The influx of not only ABA talent, but ABA strategy transformed the game from a plodding, defense-first game into a wide open, attack the rim scorefest.
Damn. 80s NBA was so awesome. And you still had throwbacks like the Bad Boys Pistons.

The whole Lakers team including Pat Riley were a bunch of whiners in the 80s. Kareem was the all time worse!
Today's game is nearly impossible to officiate. Guys are so big, fast, and strong, it's hard to be consistent bc almost every call is subjective. They have got to clean up flopping. They took a step in the right direction, but watching Derek fisher in the rocket series was sickening.

Danny Ainge is a historic whiner, he was really bad with the celtics back in the 80's. Kareem Abdul Jabbar was another. Bill Lambeer not only was the dirtiest/most hated player ever....he was a huge baby and constantly whined.

i was a kid in the early 80s...they whined......but then rick mahorn or bill lambeer would rock their world. Teams always had enforcers who would beat you up in you were a pussy. In the early 90s you had goons like charles oakley, antoine carr, mark bryant whose jobs were to literally inflict pain with their 6 fouls. I loved it, the NBA glory days, now you cant breath on durant crashing into the paint

Did NBA players literally cry to the refs after every bad call and every missed call back in the day?
Coaches... yes
Players ... no

Its there but its in all sports today. No receiver today doesn't complain to ref after an incompletion
True, players cry/bitch/whine a lot in the NFL, MLB and NBA.
