Did NBA players literally cry to the refs after every bad call and every missed call back in the day? I don't ever remember it being this bad with all the whining & crying. Between this and all the flopping, this shite is beyond ridiculous.

They didn't need to. They didn't play defense back then.

Didn't Chris Weber whine a lot in Sac? And I loved that dude.

Not 60s, 70s, or 80s but the first thing that jumped in my mind.

They used to raise their hand and own up to the foul call. It was a gentleman's game to a point.

Its there but its in all sports today. No receiver today doesn't complain to ref after an incompletion

I agree to a point. I think you saw players working the refs, but not crying after every call.

No, it wasn't. Maybe in some cases, but players truly did that the majority of the time that a foul was called.

Then you don't watch games.

Kosmo while I do billieve your point (ray allen still does it as gentlemans call today) I think its a strategy as well. I know knight use to do ir t in college and common in hs.

In the nba it has def dwindled away from gentleman's foul tho

It's definitely used as a strategy today, but I don't think that was nearly as prevalent in the 60s and 70s.

I was even watching the NCAA championship when Indiana won in 1981, and it was common in that game. A player barely hung on the rim when a player was under him, and he got a technical. It was a different game.

Pre-1975 there was a rule that you had to raise your hand if you were called for a foul. They changed the rule. Some players do it today, but it's not required anymore.

Whining is definitely at an all-time high. Even the coaches whine every single play. It really takes away from the game.

Bottom line is that they whine because it works. NBA officiating is the worst part of what should be an incredible sport.

Yes. But overall the NBA was a much better product. Actually watchable unlike the joke it is today. If my two favorite teams aren't playing I won't even watch the highlights of the finals.

Actually they did play defense then and it was a team game. Hit the open an for the Jump shot. See Knicks 1969. Now it's one on one for the dunk or an alley oop. Spectacular but a different game. Better? Every body has an opinion. Certainly today's player bigger faster etc

Considering the most common play in basketball today is the pick and roll, this can't be accurate.

or an alley oop
Isn't this the basically the definition of "hit the open man for a shot"? Also, I'd like to point out in 1970 54% of FGs were assisted around the league. This year, 60% of FGs were assisted. So I'm not sure you're correct that it was more of a team game back then.

As someone who has been watching every Finals from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s over the past several months, I can assure you the game back then was less hit the open man for the jump shot, and much more run down the court and shoot a jumper. Run down the court, shoot a jump. Run down the court, shoot a jumper. If you couldn't fast break, then throw it into a big man and let him shoot a turn around jumper. And there's far less defense than people want to remember. It was basically the type of defense Carlos Boozer gets killed for playing today. No help defense. Occasional contests on jump shots. And this is in the Finals. I don't even want to think about what the regular season games looked like. This isn't to say "no defense" was being played, but it's no where near the level of defense that's being played today. And there was nothing that resembled a team defensive scheme.

The whole Lakers team including Pat Riley were a bunch of whiners in the 80s. Kareem was the all time worse!
