HS Basketball phenom Emoni Bates recently graced the cover of Sports Illustrated.

It isn't often that a high schooler gets this type of honor, certainly not an underclassman like Bates. Bates is a 6'9 15 year old who lives in Michigan where he lead his high school team to a state championship as a freshman, posting 36 points and 19 rebounds in the state championship game. Many anaylsts have hailed Bates as the best basketball player of his age they have ever seen, and he has garnered many comparisons to Kevin Durant due to his long and lanky frame and advanced skillset. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Bates but he has certainly captured the nation's attention and will continue to see more attention and added pressure with this new accolade.
As a question to consider: Do you think kids getting this much attention at this age is good or bad? We've seen it work out for some athletes like LeBron Bryce Harper, but there have obviously been kids in the past who couldn't handle this much attention and pressure at such a young age.

Yes that is one example Lol. Although Telfair was obviously in a mich different position being a 6'0 PG instead of a 6'9 SF.

It's all about their parents/home life and their upbringing.
And obviously some talent is so great, it is unfrickupable.

When do we start the conversation about paying high school athletes?

My brother attended Midnight Madness at Michigan State last week and ended up in a long line to get Tom Izzo's autograph. He said that there was a high school kid standing with Tom that was also signing some autographs but he didn't know who he was so he didn't ask him for one. He later found out that it was Emoni Bates and he has been kicking himself since for not getting his autograph.

A couple of generations ago there was this teenager called the Pistol. He turned out pretty good.

Bates's soph highlights.

He really does remind me of Durant a lot. He's one of the few players who that's a fair comparison for too. Kid has talent.

NBA needs a "Next Lebron".
Once the HGH isn't working, and Lebron can't walk down the court, the NBA has NO super star tv ratings player.
It's been a long time since they hadn't had a "super star" to push the product. At one time, they had several players who got them eyes.
Lebron, sucking Chinese wiener or not, is still a must watch for NBA fans.

Zion wasn’t even the highest rated player coming out of HS, RJ Barrett was. Zion was so well known because of his high flying highlights. Now coming out of college was a different story and he is widely regarded as the best prospect since LeBron.

Kyrie wasn’t even the considered the best in his class, I think people forget how hyped Harrison Barnes was. Wiggins was probably considered the best since Lebron.
