Yeah the drop totally isn't related to increased ref interference and cord cutting nope it's the triggered Boomers
95% of NFL games are on broadcast television

That's not really true.
There are 16 games a week. You get 4 games on your regional broadcast, I game on NFL network, 1 game on ESPN and 10 games on Sunday Ticket or some other subscription service.
It's not cheap to be an NFL fan. If you are a local, season tickets (plus PSL, parking and concessions) are outrageously expensive. If you live outside the city of the team you root for, you have to pay for cable plus extra or go to a bar.
Obviously, the model works economically but it pushes the edge of the envelope. Angering the fanbase, whether that's a needless team move (Chargers), an officiating screwjob (Saints), a name change (Redskins) or political pandering, is a stupid risk.
Then again, the NFL probably has F-U money. Every franchise is worth over a billion dollars and revenue streams for the front office and each team are through the roof. At a certain point you become so disgustingly rich, you begin to act out simply because you have more money than your generational lineage wcan ever piss away and you need new ways of stimulation.

So you're going with the NASCAR strategy of how to grow your fan base, alienate your die hard fans and cater to the casual viewers. That worked out so well for NASCAR I'm sure the NFL will follow.
Since sports came back I have not watched a second of the NBA, barely watched any MLB though I have listened to Cubs radio broadcasts, and I turn my TV on to the NHL at 11 am and it is on all day and night. Not happy about that BS Canadian Matt Dumba pulled kneeling for the American flag but standing for the Canadian flag but there are too many good guys in the NHL to quit that sport.
When football comes back I'm not sure. I'll watch some but it won't be can't miss TV like it has been for me in the past.
Same here brother
In the office on the trading floor we usually have CNBC or Bloomberg on
We’ve put the NHL on now

I’ll be an example. 31 year old former professional baseball player. They didn’t lose me in 2017 but I won’t watch a minute this year.

They probably won’t drop that much tbh. People talk a big game on the internet but when it comes down it they are obsessed with their precious sports teams
This is absolutely wrong. NASCAR is a prime example. They had some of the most diehard fan of any sport or skill. They have been dropping for years since the industry turned against the bread of butter fans. NFL will be the same.
People have actually been surprisingly okay without sports for the last four months much to their own surprise. They won’t support the NFL nearly as much as you think they will.

refund from the Seahawks hit my account today. NFL will never get another penny out of this Patriot!
Instead they’re getting dollars, preferably straight from my checking account

And cord cutters who actually watched sports were still getting ESPN to be able to watch MNF...just via a streaming service instead of traditional cable

QFT. No NFL, no NBA, no ESPN, maybe no NCAA, tbd. It's a business truism that it's always easier, less expensive and more profitable to keep a loyal customer on board than it is to create a new one. The NFL shedding older fans will hurt their bottom line and viewership.

They just want to have the game on while talking with friends or hanging out at a bar.
Won’t be nearly as much of that going on with COVID. I think that will hurt the NFL more than anything. That, and as mentioned earlier, companies pulling back on their advertising expenses in our current economic climate.
