How underrated of a dual-threat RB was Ricky Watters?

10,643 rushing yards. 78 rushing TD

4,248 receiving yards. 13 rec TD

Super Bowl champion (XXIX)

5× Pro Bowl (1992–1996)

I feel like Marshall Faulk and LaDainian Tomlinson get the credit that they well deserve, but Ricky seems to never come up in great pass catching RB conversations.

He was more Roger Craig and less Faulk.

I mean he's good in certain systems but I'm not building my franchise around him.

If by underrated you mean, we don’t talk about him twenty years later, probably a little.

I recall him being pretty well regarded back in the day. He had lots of highlights. It’s hard not to be overshadowed historically sandwiched between Roger Craig and Garrison Hearst.

I recall him being pretty awesome.

I can remember the 49ers not wanting to pay him after that '94 Super Bowl season. They thought FB William Floyd, who was pretty versatile as a rookie FB, could pick pick up the slack.

They were wrong. William Floyd (who got injured as well) and Derrick Lovell couldn't replace the real running game thread that Watters was. '95 49ers ended up 2nd in the NFL in pass attempts and 1st in yards (The GOAT broke the NFL receiving yards record that had stood since the 60s), but they were 23rd in rushing yards.

Then got upset by Green Bay in the NFC Divisional round. Dynasty really started crumbling after that.

Hearst showing up in '97 was big, because Rice got his knee shredded opening weekend, and Owens hadn't quite yet become what he did, so they had to rely more on the running game.

I remember several years in a row Ricky waters was the #1 projected fantasy RB in the magazines. Definitely wasn’t underrated at the time but yeah, these days you don’t hear much about him

Yes Carmen Policy letting RW walk was terrible, though SF was up against the cap in 95 bc they put so many incentives that paid out if they won it all, which at the time counted toward the next years cap. This is also why they let Deion go.

In retrospect they should have done some more cap shenanigans to keep the band together another year or two.

Think at the time they let Watters walk, it was because they still thought they might be able to entice Deion to return. Trying to get some space for him.

At least that's how I remember it...some 26 years ago.

For who? For what?

Seriously though, Watters unfortunately didn’t enjoy many defining moments to truly capture the public’s imagination and resonate with them for years after his playing days. He was insanely productive but only achieved a couple of defining moments, some bad, some upstaged by Steve Young’s Super Bowl performance, many times it’s a popularity contest and he burned bridges as well as build them. Also, he played in the same era as Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, Terrell Davis, etc at no point was Watters considered the best or even 2nd best at his position, outside looking in.

I’ve never heard of him.

So I’m going to guess he’s pretty underrated.

He was a badass RB...... his big mistake was being greedy and going to Philly.
