The most ridiculous part is how it counts the 4th quarter way more than any other quarter. Because a passing touchdown yields more points in the 4th quarter than any other, right?

I agree with his point in that article, but this
quote:

Water boils at 212 degrees, not 100.
is just sad.

I wasn't talking about you in particular... I said it because thats the way a bunch of my friends look at that stat, along with many other stats.

I think it is comical everyone shits on this stat. It obviously gives you a much better picture of a QBs performance than the regular passer rating. They put in a great deal of thought into it and it is very logical, it incorporates such factors as 3rd down conversions and RZ efficiency plus how good of a defense they are playing against.

Please tell me how this is some stupid meaningless stat?

Ok:

quote:

Rodgers, whose Packers won at the Georgia Dome, completed 26 of 39 passes for 396 yards and two touchdowns. His Total QBR was 82.1.

Tebow, whose Broncos lost at home to the Chargers, completed[quote] four of 10 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. And he ran the ball six times for 38 yards and a touchdown. And his Total QBR was 83.2

This is the reason that stat is complete bullshite.

None, because it is an objective stat. Any stat that requires "film review" and objective analysis is not a mathematically sound stat, but a biased stat.

I think you mean subjective.

There is definitely some good intuition worked into qbr, but the big problem with the metric is that it unevenly weights and factors in "clutch".

I prefer net adjusted ypa as my favorite qb stat, but watching the games tells me all I need to know.

Agreed that is a damaging example, I still think overall it is better than passer rating. Could improvements still be made, certainly.

quote:

However, Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports wrote that the QBR system lacks a minimum performance frequency floor that players must meet before they can be rated, and thus it essentially penalizes Rodgers because he played throughout the entire game, while rewarding Tebow because he came off the bench in the second half in an attempt to stage a comeback.[14]

Like any stat, sample size and context matter. Even "good" metrics can be fricked up with minuscule sample sizes. This is an insignificant example, and I do not even like QBR specifically because it factors in bullshite clutch and unevenly weighs plays.

It's a bullshite stat because it gives more credit to quarterbacks who get behind and win than quarterbacks who never get behind and win. Drew Brees played lights out and led from wire to wire this past Monday, and I don't see why a quarterback gets way behind before pulling out a squeaker in the last minute should given more credit than him.

When TDs in the fourth quarter are worth more than TDs in the first quarter then I'll rate passing stats in the fourth quarter more importantly than passing stats in the first.

Keep in mind that the assholes at ESPN consider LSU to be the 2003 "co-champions" despite the fact that only one crystal ball was awarded, not two.

I have a Masters in Statistics and I've always wished I had enough time to create the perfect QB index.

If somebody gives me some good data I will try it.
