The guy said he's never seen Ryan play well against the saints. That's a blatant lie. The falcons lost, we are all aware. I will take that statline from my QB 100% of the time

They're Saints fans. Ryan could throw 60 TDs with 0 INTs and find a cure for cancer in the same season and they'll find a way to downplay it.

He's having a great year. He won't be in the MVP discussion because the injuries on defense cost them two games early in the season (and because Mahomes has been in God mode all year) but Ryan has been terrific.

Mahomes Vs Brees

quote:

The veteran has thrown one interception on 279 pass attempts. Mahomes has thrown seven in 317 tries, although his pick on Sunday was essentially a Hail Mary after poor Chiefs clock management. Mahomes is completing 66.2 percent of his passes. Brees is completing 76.3 percent of his throws. Just as Mahomes is challenging the touchdown record, Brees is threatening to take the completion percentage record and jump it from 72.1 percent by more than 4 percentage points.

Completions can be overrated, but 40.9 percent of Brees' completions go for first downs, which is well above the league average of 36.3 percent. Mahomes is averaging nearly a full yard more per pass than Brees, but a lot of that comes from his receivers' work on screens. Strip them out and Brees is completing 74.9 percent of his passes and averaging 8.7 yards per attempt. Mahomes is completing 61.9 percent of his non-screen passes while averaging ... 8.7 yards per attempt. Both marks are great. You don't need me to tell you Brees' is better.

Of course, while both teams have excellent weapons, there's a reason I ranked the Chiefs' weapons as the scariest in football before the season. Brees' top two receivers are Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara. Pretty terrifying. Mahomes gets to work with Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt. Also scary. After that, though, Mahomes' next two guys up are Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins. Brees is working with Benjamin Watson and either Ted Ginn Jr. or rookie Tre'Quan Smith, depending on when you're judging the arsenals. Brees has Mark Ingram to help in pass protection and a better offensive line given the injuries on the interior for the Chiefs, but Mahomes has more with which to work.

For me The MVP race as of now goes

1) Gurley
2) Brees
3) Mahomes

I wouldn’t have a problem with any of them winning it.

Mahomes averages higher air yards per attempt and higher air yard per completion than Brees. So you may not want to use that argument fyi

Brees also plays in a dome, which inflates his stats.

The Saints beat a team by 10 points in a game in which brees went full captain checkdown and had only 120 yards on 23 attempts.

If Ryan, Mahomes, Rivers, or Rodgers had that statline their team would get blown out by at least 3 or more touchdowns. Heck I bet each of those guys threw for more yards in a quarter this year, probably multiple times each.

He'd have the cancer down 28 to 3 but it'd come back and win.

You say that like Brees hasn’t carried the entire team on his back, like literally dozens of times.

No, over the years of course

I do like how brees gets accused of stat padding AND now apparently having too much help

He has stat padded in the past (including this year). He does have more of his yards come on RAC than the average. He does have a top flight supporting cast this year (along with impeccable "luck") which is absolutely a factor in the MVP discussion. It's why other players are in it and he's not, that and the fact that as individuals, they have outplayed him.

Mahomes, Brees, Gurley are top 3 in MVP race in any order. Brady, Cam and Deshaun Watson are 2nd tier of MVP candidates at this point. Matt Ryan isnt even close to being in MVP conversation.
