My buddy lives out there. spoke with the pro, said they barely have had any sun and they are trying to get things together. He admitted the greens were crappy and they are trying.... need a few days of sun to help out.
The HOA just bought the place and they have bought new equipment to try to bring it up to par.
just saying what they guy told us... seemed like a nice guy and he is trying to get something that was a shite show in order.

Well that seems kind of pointless. Why not just save yourself some time and quit now

The members there are terrible. They play in groups of 6 or more and play slow as hell. Haven't been back
We were playing from the tips out there a few years ago and were waiting on the tee at 18. Had a member cut in front of us and tee off from the senior-ish tees. We hollered at him and he just threw his arms up.
I proceeded to hit into him on my approach shot and he came back to us in the fairway telling us "he was a member and he could do whatever he wanted out here"

He was just hoping they would stay the same. If they do, he will stay.

Fennwood is a little 9 hole track 1.5 miles away. Their greens are 100x better than the greens out at Copper Mill.
I'm no way an expert but here's the 3 things I would do...
1) shut down the course for a week. Take soil samples. Sand and fertilize the greens Monday. And water the piss out of them. Let them grow for 4 days. Friday, sand and fertilize them again...water them. Let em grow and cut them half way on Sunday morning and lower the blades Monday morning and cut them again before you reopen.
2) cut all the rough down. Ppl hunting for balls are the bulk of pace of play problems out there.
3) set up a sister program with another course. So island members or pelican point members would get a drastically discounted rate. And copper members would get the same at those places. Sweetens the pot to join Coppermill if you were on the fence and helps fill the tee sheet if those other courses are shut down due to tourneys or maintenance.

What about the range issue.
That's a big freakin deal IMO.

Thought about that too. Only thing you can do is make 1 a par 3. And make the start of 1 an iron only range.

Not a bad plan, but by no means a guaranteed fix. Greens can go bad for many more reasons than lack of fertilizer and water. If my greens were in bad shape, Id start by punching some holes with aerification. You'll be much more efficient in correcting any soil problems (what's beneath the grass is much more important than the grass itself) by pulling cores and adding any amendments or fertilizers you need then. Take those cores you pulled and spread them in any bare spots and let them take root and begin to grow back. Basically resprigging parts of the green with the cores removed from aerification.
Regardless, you're gonna need sunlight. If it's been cloudy down there, it certainly ain't helping their recovery efforts.

So, turn #1 into the new range?
That's not a bad plan. They could squeeze par 4 there, if they moved the tee box towards the club house, and make it dog leg around the trees up by the green.
Such a shame it's gone to hell. It was a nice place 3-4 years ago.

What the hell is birdie balls?

Restricted flight practice balls/training aids.

Too much water, no sun, bad drainage and the last owner leaving the hoa with nothing but problems us the main reason for the problems. The range is owned by the original owner and he wants somewhere near 1 million for that small plot. The hoa paid nearly 1.2 million for the golf course. The range doesnt bring in alot of cash so its not a smart investment to pay that for the range in their eyes.

I do agree if the warm up is gonna be a birdie ball deal than it should be free and I've voiced that to the gm.

Your first thought is close to correct. They need sand and fertilizer but no sun, being way too wet with the type of grass on the greens is causing the biggest problems. Aerification, lots of verticutting with sand and fertilizer will get them back but the weather has to change to get them right. As for the rough, they are getting a new rough unit tomorrow so they will have 2 rough units running at all times and will be lowering the height to 1.75" which is where most people are mowing these days within .25".

I enjoy the layout, I hope she makes a comeback.

Yep, I'm not paying to hit those.

Give it some time. They are just getting what is needed to get it right.
Posted on 4/12/15 at 10:38 pm to BRgetthenet
No one should. Its a great idea since there isn't a range but it should be included in the round.

Hoa has no control with the range. The old owner owns that land and the hoa wasn't paying nearly the same for that same plot as they paid for the entire golf course which was nearly 1.2 million. It sounds like a smart business decision even if effects the course a bit. They would never get there money out of it. Gotta look at it from there side.

Doesn't matter if the range itself makes money. You will have less people join and less people pay greens fees if there is no range. You can drive 5 to 10 mts to Beaver Creek and play a much better conditioned course and use their range, which is one of the best around.
