How did you read baseball signals?

For people that played in high school or higher? What were your tells and how’d you read them?
There are so many signals with some teams, how does one know what the signal is that is being given?

Touch nose then next signal or two were instructions typically for us

They’re kept pretty simple in HS ball. There’s only a couple messages that need to be conveyed, and that takes just one signal. All the rest is decoys that the player knows to ignore.

Always an indicator that signals the next touch is the sign.
Touch hat brim, watch, or left ear. Something like that.
I'm sure it's more complex at the MLB level. Maybe 2 things in row trigger the sign. But that's how it works for college and HS.

This. We also had a signal to disregard any previous signal. Like a slate cleaner.

My high school coach was ridiculously simple. It was always once he ran his hand across his chest. The next signal after that is the real signal.
In college it became a little more complicated. It might be a series of signs and after that is the real signal. It also would chance mid game if they thought it was being stolen.

First touch....always the best. Have people trying to figure out what your indicator is, and its as simple as the first thing you touch is the signal.
Sometimes the simplest thing is the hardest to figure out.

We did indicator then however many touches after was the action. For example, watch is the indicator. One touch after touching the watch is bunt, two touches is steal, so on and so forth. We also had some first or last touch signals as well. First touch to brim of the cap is take, for example.

In LL we had this opposing coach who always touched his belt buckle after a series of nonsense signals...
And then you see the next sign...and kid bunts. That's about as complex as LL got...figuring out when a bunt was coming on a sacrifice.
But he had his tell all season long. I'm sure MLB changes it up every game or something.

For us, the hat was the indicator and wiping the sleeve was the wipe off.
You get to the pro level and there could be multiple guys giving indicators from the dugout.

Our signals changed based on the inning. Even number of inning it was 2nd sign after indicator. If odd number inning it was the 1st sign after indicator.
Pitching signals depended on number of outs.

Nah, not true. Pro signals aren't any more complicated. Think we switched a few times a game but it was typically first and last touch, first touch, last touch, or possibly indicator. We didn't ever put enough stuff on for it to matter. Our manager told us nobody bought their $5 ticket to thirsty Thursday to watch us lay down sac bunts. Bigs are the same way, they are hitting bombs, not calling bunts, and most guys that steal bags just have a green light to pick a spot.
Our pitching signals were simple, too, mainly because we had so many young guys from different countries and backgrounds, and some couldn't handle complexity. We had a pitching coach wanting us to use "strikes plus one" meaning with a runner on second if we had 0 strikes it was first signal, 1 strike second signal etc. Catchers got tired of taking 95 to the chest while expecting a breaking ball and dumbed it down.
Best catcher I had would just flash a signal when the guy on second wasn't looking, or he would dummy a bunch of taps that didn't mean a thing and then we would go outs plus one on the signals

Usually an indicator. When we thought they were picking them up we'd go no outs last signal, 1 out first signal, 2 out a second signal with a wipe out option to start the sequence over.
