As far as what constitutes possession, yes. Cribs possessed it, was hit, hit the ground, then the ball came out. Down by contact, Indy ball. It's incredibly simple to see.
I mean different as in he didn't have to take two steps are make a football move. He just needed control of the ball when he was hit. Which he had.

It's mind blowing how little this board understands the rules of a game they're obsessed with

Are these the first two football games you've ever watched?

Phil Simms compared it to a catch over the middle, but he's never been one to have a full grasp of the rules anyway

Legit question asked by the OP. Can't really answer your question other than referees are fricking idiots. Dallas and Denver got fricking screwed. Big time.

Or OP doesn't understand the rules and both call were correct.

It's a punt, not a pass dummy.

Yeah and @ Mike Carey
Not only was he wrong but he demonstrated a clear lack of knowledge as it pertains to the basic rules of football
Glad he's not fricking over teams anymore

Why would a punt returner have to gain possession the same way a receiver does ?

I obviously understand they're on different types of plays, I just don't understand why one of them had possession but the other didn't when they are both catching the ball. I'm biased, and it's just my opinion, but I thought Dez had control for a longer period of time than Cribbs did and I don't understand why they wouldn't be called the same.
I've also said previously that I think the refs got the call correct earlier according to the rules if 3 steps isn't a football move. I just don't understand why the rules for returning punts and catching passes are different as far as establishing possession.

You can't say you understand and then ask this question. It shows you don't understand.

If a punt returner has the ball for even a split second , then drops it when he hits the ground after being hit he is down by contact. Not true for a receiver

A punt reception and a pass reception are two different things? I've never heard that you have to "complete the play" with a punt reception.

Clearly. The rules for completing a catch and fumbling are not the same. If a running back gets hit immediately after receiving the handoff, has control of the ball when he hits the ground, and then the ball comes loose, fumble or no fumble?

it should have been an incomplete punt
