How can coaches be paid millions and just not do basic things like call timeouts?

It is astounding how you end that game with 2 timeouts

I assume they’re caught up with other thoughts, like Xs and Os and just forget

Maybe he wanted them to kick it or something. i have no idea but it was idiotic to not call the timeouts. He didn't even ice him.

It’s because you rarely have just one person in control anyone. Rarely is the head coach the smartest guy. Now the head coach is a people organizer. It’s indecision by committee. That’s why you don’t see it with teams like the patriots cuz Belichick doesn’t do that. He’s the brain.
It’s why madden jockeys always complain Well I can do it on my Xbox. Yeah cuz it’s one guy in control of all aspects.
NFL and college teams all have 20 different experts trying to advise the HC.
It really not surprising when you think about it.
It’s just disappointing. Cuz it’s unnecessary.
Too many chiefs not enough Indians. Story of the downfall of corporations across America

I forgot which team it was last year, but there was a team of Asians in the booth advising the coach on when to go for it on 4th down and when to call TOs.

Every staff should have that. Even Belichick has Ernie Adams to help him with stuff like that.

The real answer is that Fangio is a defensive coach and he had an idea on when he would use his timeouts and when his defense didn't give him the stop he expected, he had no idea what to do.

Bill Simmons said like 15 years ago that teams should hire MIT students who love Madden to control time outs and things like that. One of his great takes (doesn’t have so many these days).

Both Vrabel and Fangio said it was because they wanted him to try to kick it. Doesn't change how stupid the decision was which is on Fangio.

I wonder how often there are guys on a headset trying to get the coach to call a timeout and he just doesn’t. It’s not like you’d ever find out.

That was an XFL team, can’t remember which though.

“It was two-fold there,” Fangio said of electing not to use any of his timeouts on the Titans’ final drive. “One, their field goal kicker had obviously been having his problems so I didn’t want to extend the drive to where they could get closer.

“And we would have used a timeout but we got the running back out of bounds, and we would have used the second timeout, but they threw an incompletion.”

Gostkowski had missed three field goals and one point-after attempt before his winner.

Breaking down the Titans’ final drive to see where Fangio could have stopped the clock:

Before the two-minute warning. On the Titans’ fourth play, Ryan Tannehill threw six yards to running back Derrick Henry. The play ended at the 2:16 mark. It might have made sense for Fangio to use his first timeout then. He didn’t and the Titans didn’t snap it until 2:01.

After the two-minute warning, part 1. After an incompletion and a pass interference penalty on cornerback Michael Ojemudia, both of which stopped the clock, Tannehill threw six yards to Adam Humphries. The play was over at the 1:47 mark. Fangio didn’t call timeout and the Titans snapped it again at 1:34.

Dude already missed four times. Probably afraid a timeout would be a reverse ice.

Look I’ll be honest. The flack the Denver coach is getting is pretty crazy.

TN was driving and honestly was pissing away their own clock as they had a kicker who was 0/3 with a missed XP. The Denver coach was banking on the slapdick missing again and I would have done the same

Having already missed three, I would have banked on him making the next one, but I am a baseball guy at heart so I just look at it as him being ‘due’
