Looks like the official shortage in LA is getting worse due to older refs sitting this year out, and it's going to lead to more Thursday and Saturday games.

LINK

Gonna be a lot of overworked refs this season.

Yeah I cover about 3 miles during a Varsity game. Ive done THUR/FRI on consecutive nights... not really an issue. It's not as bad here as it is in some places.

It's not so much the physical overworking but being booked for more games. Usually guys work Wed, Thurs, Fri nights doing middle school, FR/JV, and varsity games and then a lot of them spend the day Saturday working multiple young kids games. Now a good many will be booked with HS games on Saturday, the shortage will end up being on the kids games.

I officiated high school football in Palm Beach County Florida many years ago and we had the same problem. Each high school agreed to move one home game from Friday to Thursday. The schools biggest problem with this was money. The attendance and concession revenues were a lot lower for Thursday games.

not sh9cked, i remember in HS football all the refs being old then.

cfb is full of old arse fogeys, as is NFL.

It's because of the shite pay. I remember Dick Hantack in NFL, woh was one of Head Officials, and he had to teach at the HS near me in the offseason because of the shite pay, compared to fulltime refs.

NFL won't claim them as fulltime, and pay per game.

There's a shortage damn near everywhere.

For soccer, we have a hard time sending 3 refs to every site on our busiest nights, and I often do games 5 days a week (and I usually have to do 2 games per night).

This right here.

I just started doing HS football last season and have already decided I will never advance to an on-field position. I like running the game or play clock.

Pville, do you referee HS soccer in Georgia? If so, which association? I'm with Etowah Valley out of Cartersville.
