YPA is the most efficient stat in my opinion. Sure it can be deceiving like any other, but most often it is not and the correlation to winning is probably higher than any other metric other than net passer rating.

While this has not been updated for the most recent set of games, I think this is also an interesting metric for evaluating how much "work" a QB puts in. If you look at the Highest YAC% for QBs. The top 5 is... Cassell, EJ Manuel, Dalton, Bridgewater and Hustle Russell

quote:I can do this too. In 2006 Drew averaged 34.6 attempts per game a 8.0ypa. In 2011 he averaged 41 attempts and 8.3 YPA. Fact is, it is an average and you sounded like a maroon earlier
Brees threw*** it less in '09 because he didnt HAVE to throw it as much. The Saints were ranked no.6 in rushing that year as a team. He became more efficient and his fricking YPA went up as he threw the damn ball less. The Saints are less efficient in '10, he throws the ball more and his YPA went down

I'd like to see a rocket contest. I'd put my money on Cutler after a six pack of budlight

Cutler, Grossman, Jamarcus and Jeff George. I would watch that on Pay-per-view.

Vick and Favre too.
I've heard Bert Jones probably had the best pure arm ever in the game.

Yards After Catch. So Air Yards are Passing yards-Yards After Catch. Granted both can be skewed, but Air Yards per attempt, is a decent heuristic to see how deep their average pass attempt is.

Mighty fine company Mr. Russell finds himself in with this metric...

If that's the case, then Wilson was #2 in the NFL his rookie season at 4.58 and #3 in the NFL last year at 4.43. He's dropped off quite a bit this year since they run a lot of screens and quick outs with Percy Harvin. LINK

Agreed. He's elite in this category so far in his career.

Jamarcus Russell has the best arm I've ever seen

If being at the top of that category is bad, bottom of the category must be good, right?

Right, it really isnt the end all be all of QB measurables. Just something else to consider when looking at QB's and what they are expected to do within their offensive roles. I mean Charlie Whitehurts is #1 in Air Yard per Attempt, for christs sakes. Russell is good no doubt, I just wanted to throw some other stats that people could squabble over. haha

What it does prove though is that he's been throwing the ball further down the field than pretty much anybody else in the league so far in his career and being incredibly good at it. Game managers don't do that.

Yeah, I just wanted to bring up the statistic because it helps us more objectively quantify what a QB's role in a particular offense is. As you stated Wilson is pretty remarkable in his stats in other years, he a higher percentage of passes over 15 yards than most of the QB's in the league and was still mighty efficient. This year though, he may have to do less by having Harvin for a (hopefully) full season. Doesn't make him less "elite" at all.
