I don't see Texas joining the PAC12.

To the extent that the Big12 goes through with its rumored 13 year grant of TV rights from the schools to the conference itself when the new TV deal is signed, it's going to be difficult for any of those teams to go anywhere, absent:

1. A specific out in the deal that allows the school to "buy back" its rights - I'd imagine that is expensive, otherwise what's the point in the grant to begin with; or
2. A willingness to flat out breach the contract and pay the conference damages (which of course happens all the time).

What if UVA and UNC get invites from the B1G? If VT and NCSU agreed to support UVA and UNC moving to the B1G on the condition that they be allowed to pursue SEC membership, could that relieve some of the political heat?

that would be the only way really, b/c it would benefit both schools

UVA just would not be a good fit overall in the B1G for numerous reason. VT is not as good as a culture fit as some SEC people believe a majority of their fans and alumni do not view themselves as southerners

Maryland is a much more logical target for the Big Ten IMO.

i think so to, the B1G is full of metro area schools in or right near major cities

How? The B1G has a desire for all its members to be in the AAU (though it took Nebraska knowing it was going to be kicked out) and both UVA and UNC are AAU members (as is MD and Duke).

My speculation but UVA is different from an academic perspective in that it has a small undergrad enrollment and even smaller graduate enrollment whereas the Big1G schools are, for the most part, very large undergrad schools combined with huge (relatively speaking) graduate schools that do a ton of research. Not sure if UVA fits that - but frankly, I'm pulling stuff out of thin air here.

Currently Big Ten schools are supposed to share borders with other Big Ten states. Virginia would change this practice and if the Big Ten is going to break this practice I think it would be for a bigger fish than UVA (IMO).

State them

ETA: For the record, I do believe we fit the culture of UNC/Maryland/Duke/etc better than the majority of the BIG10 schools...but come one, you have Northwestern in your conference. If that can fly, then anyone can fly.

I see no problem with UVA except that they don't share a common border with any current Big Ten team. That would be a break from tradition.

Is that more-so true than the ACC?

yea id say so, Maryland and the schools in the research triangle area are basically it and chapel hill is still a college town. Lots of the B1G schools are in or with a stones throw of huge cities. The only real college towns i can think of are Madison, State College and Bloomington

but the B1G school i could see UVA matching up with would be northwestern

The border thing has been debunked elsewhere...

How big is Lansing? Lafayette and Urbana-Champaign is also out there in the middle of nowhere. And now you have Nebraska and Iowa...a lot of small town/city schools IMO. That's almost half that are small college towns.

ACC, for the most part, is pretty split between small town and large city.

Large city: Miami, BC, Maryland, GT,
Medium size: NC State, FSU
Small towns: Clemson, UVA, VT, UNC, Duke, WF

I wish the rumor mongers would make up their minds. I just browsed a thread on another board saying they are going to the Big Texas conference.

I know, this too confused me to when I heard it. That is why I came here to ask if anyone here was hearing this... Plus one would think the SEC has enough Veto power in the 3 teams of UGA, UF, USC(e)Blocking any FSU, or Clemson to the SEC...

I seriously doubt they care enough about a 22 mile gap across Maryland ad West Virginia for that to really be a factor in any decision to add a school from Virginia or not.

Wake Forest is in the Piedmont Triangle (Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point), which is the 30th ranked CSA in the country with 1.6 million people. It's a suburban campus, but it's definitely not a small town. For comparison, Tallahassee (which you stated is medium sized) has 360,000 people. Raleigh/Durham/Cary, which is where UNC, Duke, and NC State is a CSA with a population of 1.7 million.
