re: Have you stopped watching / following a sport? If so, why?

While the statistics may suggest that is the case, today's game is still very dull. Every time I scroll past a NBA game I see the same stale one on one isolated play, with the other 8 players on the court standing around with the occasional screen. We get some Thunder games on FSN Oklahoma here. Every time I see them I think they should still be the Supersonics. Payton and Kemp were fun to watch back in their prime. With Warriors/Cavaliers seemingly a lock to go to the Finals, I'm hard pressed to give a shite about any regular season games.

No you don't. You don't know what you're watching. There are even statistics that measure "pace" by counting possessions per game. It is an absolute fact that he game is faster today than it was in the 1990's.
Barely. Pace last year was 96.2, the highest its been since 1992-93. the previous year it was 95.8, and the previous it was 93.9... which it was the year prior. Pace is trending up, but it's still lower than the early 90s.
The pace in 1989-90 was 98.3. It declined the next years to 97.8, then 96.8 to 96.6 to 95.1 to 92.9 in 1994-95. From there, it stayed within a point of 92 nearly every year for 25 years. We're just coming out of it, and there's no way to know if its permanent, or just a blip. We've had one and half seasons of higher pace, so let's slow down.
The 80s were pretty much nonstop in 100's, only once dipping below. We're still not at that pace. We are getting closer, but we are certainly not back in the fast break 1980s and its early 90s vestigal tail.
ETA: Admittedly, we are clearly out of the rock fight era of the immediate post-Jordan NBA, which was near unwatchable basketball. The game is far better than its early 00s nadir.

Even if you knew nothing about the X's and O's of the game, you could still see how much more teams run the floor now compared to how they played in the 90's. I don't know if it's revisionist history or nostalgia on your part, but the game is much more based on pace and movement now than it was in the 90's.

In fact, Mike D'Antoni's "7 Seconds or Less" Phoenix Suns teams from about 10 years ago is basically the blueprint for NBA teams today.
And those teams were known for playing an exciting, fast-paced brand of basketball.

Which is a pretty low standard. That's the admitted worst era in NBA history except for when the ABA was at its peak and took all of the fun talent.
Yes, now is easily better than the single worst era in basketball history. That's not really something to put on your advertising.
I do like this era, but it is quite a bit different than the 80s and early 90s Golden Age. And I don't think anyone gets anywhere by telling people they didn't actually enjoy those games. Or telling people they don't actually enjoy it now. And you certainly shouldn't tell people thy aren't smart enough to know what they find aesthetically pleasing.
I don't like that teams jack up so many threes nowadays, and do miss legit bad blood. I miss the violence (same with hockey). People make so much more money now, no one is going to cost anyone a $10 million paycheck by taking out your knees. Which, technically, is better. It's certainly better for the players. But as a fan, if I'm being honest, I miss the swaggering violence of the Pistons. I miss genuine hatred.

The average pace over the last 5 seasons is 94.6
The pace hasn't been higher in a single season since 1993.
And I watched basketball in the 80's. The reason the pace was so high is that teams would run the fast break, make 1 pass and shoot a jumper. Then they'd go back the other way and shoot almost immediately. It was just constant back and fourth.

MLB, NBA, NFL and NASCAR. Will occasionally watch a playoff game but that's it. College or bust for me these days

The Rockets are nothing like the Bad Boys. I'm sorry, but no. Also, I live in Dallas and root for the Mavs.
I don't think the NBA stinks. It's really entertaining, but I find the modern game is unimpeachable triumphalists to be as obnoxious as old-timers waxing nostalgic. In any sport. Really, the game is different. It doesn't progress so much as it morphs. Once we reached a point at which players didn't have to have straight jobs, we did not keep evolving as a species into better and better athletes. We have largely plateaued (which makes sense, that kind of progression takes centuries, not decades).

Always remember that the 'E' in ESPN stands for Entertainment. Entertainment first, competition, a distant second.
I don't follow any pro sports except for baseball. Again, the players are paid to entertain; I am tired of predictable storylines playing out. With that being said, baseball fell victim to it with the Cubs. I tried to watch Warriors-Cavs, I really did. I will turn on a game at the end if it is close.
I don't *watch* much at all; I am a manager who works 40-60 hours per week, and have better things to do than to watch 1,000 commercials. I will turn on a game late if it is tight.

I stopped watching the nhl when the thrashers left Atlanta. Nothing against the sport, just didn't have enough time to follow everything, especially without a team

I'll watch college football as far as the SEC us concerned. I don't care about the 40 bowl games. Alabama winning every year is making me less interested in College football though.
NBA: only watch the playoff teams: particularly Spurs and Warriors.
MLB: 162 games is boring. I'll watch playoffs.
NFL: watch playoffs and Super Bowl: frick Rodger Goodell and his bullshite rulings. Targeting and concussions can take a hike.
NHL : never watched a full game ever. I could not name four teams or players in the league.

I did watch a little of Thunder/Rockets. It wasn't quite as boring as most other NBA games. There were a couple of nice pick and rolls and lay ups in transition. Still saw a lot of standing around and isolated play. I do like the TNT broadcasts better than ESPN. Marv Albert is still smooth as always, but at they need to dump Brent Barry and bring back Doug Collins when his ESPN contract is up. The studio show from Las Vegas from some show was really good too. Smith and Barkley trying to play drums or some other instrument was entertaining. Product was still better in the '80s and '90s though.

I'm beginning to like college sports less, just because I actually like my sports to feature decent quality of play. The older I get, the easier it is to discern how far behind college players are.

Interesting. As I get older I'm enjoying pro sports less, and college sports more. I can't even believe I just typed that as someone who used to like pro sports much, much more. I never watched as little NFL as I did this year. Some weekends the only game I watched was SNF or MNF. NFL opening weekend used to be like Christmas to me. Now I couldn't care less when the season starts.

My guess is there are a lot of cranky old southern guys on this site who long for the days of Larry Bird.
Why don't you say what you really mean...There are a lotta racist arse crackers on here.
Has nothing to do with a great white player not being in the league. Like I said before the game is pussified beyond belief now. Lebron and the rest of the bitches in the NBA now like Durant and Curry wouldn't have survived going up against the Pistons, Bulls, Knicks, Lakers, Jazz, and Celtics of the 90's. You could actually put your hands on someone and play D and a hard foul was just that a hard foul, not a trip outta the game.
Hell, you gotta look no farther than the ultimate bitch in the league right now, Westbrook. Every little call that doesn't go his way he has to whine and cry to the refs and throw a temper tantrum like a spoiled arse 2 year old; a lot of times to the detriment of his team. How many times has he been tossed in the last few weeks? Not to mention he did that shite twice in one game last year in a game that OKC was winning at the time in the playoffs . Call didn't go his way so he stayed at the other end of the court whining like a bitch while the man he should have been covering drained a 3 on the other end of the floor.
Bunch of spoiled arse pussies!!!

Quit following the NFL several years ago. Just isn't worth watching.

NBA- loved it in the 80's and early 90's. To me the game just sucks now.
