It's about 50/50 from what I've seen. OKC is maybe somewhat close to CC in the standings today. By seasons end, they won't be.

Two seasons ago, Curry and Harden were the MVP front-runners. Warriors were ranked 1 and Rockets were ranked 2.

The general argument from the media was that Curry's team was better so he deserved the MVP even though Harden was seemingly carrying the Rockets single-handedly to the 2 seed.

Flip to today, and Harden and Westbrook are the MVP front-runners. Rockets are ranked 3 (and right up there with the Warriors and Spurs), and the Thunder are 5th.

The general media argument now seems to be that it doesn't matter that the Thunder are ranked 5th... Westbrook is single-handedly carrying the Thunder.

Is this the media picking the player they like first and using whatever argument they can to justify the player they like even if they are hypocritical in their reasoning?

Harden was great 2 seasons ago, but Curry was clearly a good bit better.

Harden is not a good bit better than Westbrook this season.

That's probably the difference.

But the answer to your more general question is yes, the goalposts are always moved for this award. If not, Lebron and MJ would have 10-15 MVPs.

I wish it would be awarded at the end of the season. Great players win titles. Lebron would've made it very interesting with the finals performance he had last season.

I was going to make this exact post, but didn't want to put in the effort.

Maybe not 10-15 MVP's, but they certainly would have more.

Based on? Harden was much much closer to steph in the GOAT advanced metric stat WS/48 than Westbrook is to James this season.

FWIW I've listened to 3 non-CC Affiliated podcasts this week with 5 guests (3 MVP voters from last year) giving their MVP pick, all have Harden currently as the MVP. These guys are coming around.

Tomorrow will be a good opportunity for Harden to remind everyone who the superior player is.

I'd pick Harden for MVP if the voting was today.

What? I'm not a hack like you.

I don't like Harden's game in a lot of ways but he's the MVP so far this year. Season isn't over yet.

I think you are underrating how terrible Harden is on D. He is amazing on the other side of the court, but I just don't think you can give the MVP to one of the worse defensive players in the league.

Media members will always move the goalpost to fit their argument whether it's sports or politics.

You mean like everyone here does when they are whining about their team/players not getting enough respect or their political side getting fricked by whatever it is they think is fricking them?

I can't say I've been paying close enough attention, to be honest. I've cut down on my sport watching drastically.

Probably Eric Gordon. Is he starting? I don't even know.

Edit: I see that Gordon is starting. So I have no idea. I'll tell you in April.

Gordon is not starting... he comes off the bench.

This season Harden has not been bad on defense at all. I cannot even recall one time this season where he had any defensive lapse where he got caught ball-watching.

The "Harden is bad on defense" narrative is pushed hardest by those who rarely see him play a full game. Like yourself.

Steph Curry and James Harden

Only one of these players have I seen pulled off the court for a key defensive possession.

Believe me if harden had any plays that were embarrassing / Worthy of a lowlight video we would've seen them by many times over with all the haters James has. iyrc we said before the season that there would be no harden defense lowlight vids this year.
