I'm enjoying it. Threw me off for a bit, but it's pretty interesting.

I want Mario Kart contests with Jim Ross as the commentator. I'll settle for nothing less.

This is far more interesting than mindless talking head drivel or Tebow reports that normally plague the worldwide leader.

It is pretty crazy that watching other people play video games will become a billion dollar industry in a few years.

These games have nearly 30 million players a day worldwide and the championships are watched by a sizable portion of the globe every year.

I don't blame ESPN for jumping on this bandwagon.

There is a shitload of money in video game competitions.

Exactly.

This game isn't even the biggest of it's genre.

eSports has hundreds of millions out there waiting to be made.

Ironically enough, we were all told growing up "You can't make a living playing video games!"

It really is crazy how popular these games are.

Apparently 30 million+ people watched the championships and thousands attended the actual competition.

This isn't some passing phase.

I think it is called Heroes of the Storm.

The most popular one of this genre worldwide is called League of Legends.

I know for League of Legends, they filled the Staples center in LA for the world championships (2013).

Since then, they've hosted the world championship for 2014 in South Korea (sold out a soccer stadium there).

This year, I believe they are hosting in Berlin.

Back when LoL first started, they were hosting competitions in the equivalent of hotel conference rooms. Now they are making nearly billions and selling out stadiums. It's crazy lucrative.

ETA: Even crazier....these games are free.

ETA: Dammit Heroes of the Storm

Hold on, WTF is this shite? Is this a real video game? This like some new Zelda or something? I haven't played a video game since like high school, but this looks like the lamest game ever.

I would give anything for ESPN to broadcast a Mario Kart contest with Cotton McKnight and Pepper Brooks as the announcers.

I'd pay good money for that.

Did the announcer just say Cal is moving away from "what's socially acceptable"

Is this like going for it on 4th in Madden or putting a super fast WR at QB in NCAA?

The kids who stream themselves playing this game are making ridiculous amounts of money and partnering with the host streaming site.

I've read the Korean and Chinese players were signing contracts for teams well into six figures (not counting endorsements)

ETA: Some colleges offer scholarships for gaming teams.

I am pretty pissed at my parents for telling me to put down the controller to study as a kid

One of my friends brothers plays video games for a living. He streams them, etc. He went to some thing recently where he signed autographs and shite.

I know for League, the players out there are extremely popular. Every week they go outside and take pictures and sign shite for the fans.

It really does blow my mind that video games have become this popular and lucrative (outside of sales for the developing companies)

ETA: This game is difficult to follow. League of Legends is way simpler to watch. Granted Riot (the game's creating company) broadcasts on its own, so I doubt it will ever be on ESPN.
