Went from Browns DC to Michigan St but had quite a few college gigs before his days in Cleveland. Would probably consider him more of a college coach even before MSU.

First HC gig was Toledo.

Ray Perkins
Bud Wilkinson
John Mackovic
Chan Gailey
Cam Cameron
Dick Vermeil
Bobby Petrino
Jim Mora
Lou Saban
Steve Mariucci
Urban Meyer
Al Groh
Bobby Ross (very underrated IMO)
Jim Caldwell
Dennis Green
Butch Davis
Dennis Erickson
Chip Kelly

probably the best example of an NFL coach going to a college team.

Stallings was the most successful after the NFL, but he was out of an NFL job. Al Groh resigned from the Jets to take the Virginia job, Petrino quit on the Falcons after a Monday night football game to take the Arkansas job.

Neither USC nor the Seahawks were particularly good when Carroll took over.

USC was a joke when he took over. He literally built them into a dynasty. Of course he obviously had help getting the players, but watching USC in the early 00's was watching the game evolve in real time. They were a steamroller for a few years.

I don't think the coach is a integral in the NFL usually, but he was very involved in Seattle with everything. And he's easy to get along with. That goes a long way with owners.

It's funny, he kind of did the reverse of Saban. Built an explosive offense in college and dominated and then built a defensive juggernaut in the NFL and dominated. Not a perfect companion obviously, but kind of interesting.

USC also had some great defenses when PC was there. 2008 D was sick. The offensive was pretty much a standard pro style offense (not all that different from what Saban ran at LSU and initially at Bama) but had some great QBs and Reggie Bush was just a freak

In shape Lendale White too. And you are right, they had some nasty defense too. Hell, Troy Polamalu played there

He was a career college assistant and then Head Coach at Texas A&M before getting his first NFL gig.
