we'll see, he was a starter at houston, now he'll be a bench player. he's avereages around 18 ppg, as a starter, so i dont' see it being a huge deal. people act like the thunder is going to fall of the face of the earth now that harden is gone, i just don't see it.

same can be said for perry jones, reggie jackson, and other players throughout the league. i trust presti, everyone thought it was a mistake to take westbrook as high as he did, same goes for harden, ibaka wasn't a high draft pick either. at the end of the day, KD, Westbrook and Ibaka are in for the long haul, as long as they are still here, OKC will be a in the hunt.

Houston's hunt for a superstar for the past few years nets them 2 bench players as their "stars"

Harden has superstar potential. Coming off the bench in OKC doesn't make him a bench player, he's probably the best young 2 in league.

If Gordon would ever be healthy, I think he's better than Harden. However, taking in to account Gordon's massive vagina, Harden is in a better spot.

Martin spent much of 2011-12 as a spot-up shooter.

Not true. 22.5% of his offensive possessions were in iso last year. The previous year it was 25%. That is a fairly small difference. He was a spot up shooter 19.4% of the time last year. He spent more time in iso and pick and roll situations than as a spot up shooter. If he attacked the rim less it had very little to do with a system change. Maybe it was injuries, frustration with management and coaches, or just a complete fluke. But the system change should have had little effect on Martin's free throw attempts.

quote:

that FT drop has nothing to do with a rule change and everything to do with a system change

Look, there is a reason why people were calling it the Kevin Martin rule. Anyone that had seen Martin play before last year knew that the rule change was going to hurt him. It isn't a coincidence that his free throw attempts dropped.

quote:

the majority of his FTs came due to shot attempts at the rim. he lost more than 75% of his FTAs

Which had very little to do with the system change. Again, he ran iso almost as much in 11-12 as he did in 10-11.

After looking over some of the stats on synergy sports I like this trade a lot more for OKC than I initially did. Harden was the ball handler in pick and roll situations a lot last year. He was also really good at it. Martin was used far less in those situations, but he was just as effective. This preseason the Rockets were using Martin in a lot more pick and roll and he put up some great numbers.

I also think people are completely wrong about Martin needing the ball in his hands to be effective. While he is at his best in those situations, he is still great at moving without the ball and is a solid spot-up shooter. He should do really well in OKC, especially if he can get his free throw attempts back up.

martin actually was competent last year on defense, surprisingly

No he wasn't. He was terrible. .94 points allowed per possession is god awful. Few players allowed more. Going by drtg, Martin was tied for 377th.

There is a huge difference in coming off the bench for a few mins and starting every night.

But best two in the league?

This is very good for the Hornets...this makes the Rockets significantly worse for years to come. Harden is an upgrade over Martin, but not by as much as people make it seem. Giving up a young prospect in Lamb and other future picks was Morey being an idiot as usual.
