Cleveland Guardians outfielder Cooper Ingle messed up on Tuesday night.
Ingle, in the seventh inning of their 4-2 loss to the Texas Rangers, caught a simple fly ball hit by Alejandro Osuna. Then, after completing the grab, Ingle tossed the ball over the netting for fans sitting in the stands at Progressive Field. The gesture is one that players across the league do constantly, and is almost always received well between innings.
But that was the issue. This wasn't between innings. The Guardians only had two outs.
As there was a runner at second when Ingle threw the ball out of play, he was then granted home and given a run. That put the Rangers up 3-2 at the time. All Ingles could do was walk back to his spot in left field, looking incredibly defeated as he was charged with an error.
"Obviously, I feel terrible," he said, via The Associated Press. "It's a pretty embarrassing feeling."

Not the first person to do it, won't be the last.

Big whoop. That’s just a normal Tuesday for the Mets.

least he didn't misplay a ball at the wall and have it doink off his head for a homerun

The official scoring play summary of the play on MLB.com:
“Alejandro Osuna flies out to left fielder Cooper Ingle. Ezequiel Duran scores. Throwing error by left fielder Cooper Ingle.”
True, although maybe brain error would’ve been more accurate.

Ingle, 24, was making just his second major league start as an outfielder. He was called up from the team's Triple-A affiliate in Columbus last week, and made his MLB debut on Friday.
Dang.

I get how a tenured MLB player does it. How the hell do you do it in your second game in the MLB?

Yeah...wouldn't be shocking for him to find his way back down a level.

This feels like backwards.
"i understand how a seasoned vet makes this mistake. How would the greenest possible guy make it"
is an interesting take

Because seasoned vets have played over 400 major league games…..Anyone is going to have a brain lapse at some point
If it happens two games into your MLB track you are an idiot

Probably excitement and adrenaline.
He made a mistake trying to right by the fans. Could have thrown the ball away out of anger and frustration.

I just meant, making a mistake to do right by the fans is a lot difference than hurting your team because you were pissed off and did something stupid.

I think it’s more like, it’s easy to see how a guy in the middle of his 12th season might not be completely paying attention / go through the motions / have a momentarily brain lapse during a random game in late June.
A guy just recently called-up though you think would be keenly aware of every possible situation and the game circumstance. He might make physical mistakes out of nervousness (gripping the bat tight, making a bad throw toward the plate, etc.) but it’s weird that a brand-new guy wouldn’t be completely locked in mentally.
