Patriots/Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX; more specifically the final play.

Patriots/Falcons 28-3 Super Bowl.

In hindsight, this shouldn't be seen as a surprise anymore. That Falcons team lost several games in the exact same way: building a big lead, and an undersized defense getting exhausted as the opponent established any level of rhythm or identity. The Falcons had an excellent offensive juggernaut, but their defense was small, fast, and prone to getting worn down. Belichick, saw that and realistically allowed the Falcons to begin tiring. When they did, he and Brady pounced. No other team *probably* could have done what the Patriots did, but, that's also what made them so incredibly good during their run.

Kyle Shanahan has since done the *exact* same thing two more times in the Super Bowl, as the 9ers blew big leads and didn't take control of the clock/momentum down the stretch. His offenses, and that iteration of the Falcons defense, had a fatal Achilles heel.

Honestly so far it’s one of my favorite sports books I’ve ever read. A lot of background leading up to the us open. It does a good job of building a world of how big of a deal it was. Cool to really get into the history of modern golf and connecting the dots from people and courses you have heard of.

Herb Brooks walked into the dressing room before that game, and delivered the most badass sports speech of all time. "If you lose this game today, you'll take it to your graves. " He walked out, walked back in, and said, "To your fricking graves." That was it.

That wasn't before the game. It was before the third period, because they were losing 2-1.

You're right.

Still a great story.

An amateur winning the Open in 1918 wasn’t that far of a stretch. Ouimet was because of his background, but not because he was an amateur. The movie is good but not really that accurate to the events of what actually happened.

Francis went on to win a couple of US Amateurs and was an ambassador for the game for the rest of his life.

That was the summer of my freshman year of high school and my dad and I spent like $150 to get the entire Euro on PPV. That Greek team sucked arse, parked the bus and countered to win 1-0. At least Leicester played real soccer.

If they sucked arse, what did the other 15 teams suck?

Defense wins championships. You do what you need to do to win. They needed to play stellar defense to win and that's what they did.

I always enjoy all the hate dumped on the Pirate Ship.

Did you cry along with Ronaldo after the final?

Most big upsets would qualify.

I doubt people walking into a noon kick App State vs Michigan thought they were about to watch a soon to be very famous game. It was supposed to be an uneventful non conference cupcake.

And that Michigan team was loaded. They returned most of the key guys from the 06 team that was 3 points away from playing in the NC the year prior. We were actually damn close to getting the UM/OSU rematch in 06 too.

I was at the UM/Oregon the week after the app state and UM got absolutely destroyed in the big house.

MLB first combined no hitter-

Babe Ruth walks the first batter on 4 pitchers and is ejected for punching the umpire.

Ernie Shore comes in, picks off the runner and then retires the next 26 in order. Shore faced 26 batters and recorded 27 outs. Ruth didn't throw a strike, but was credited with a no hitter.

I remember watching the ESPN halftime show during that game. Lou Holtz and Mark May were still on air, and while May and Rece Davis were talking about how Michigan was going to turn it on in the second half, Holtz was the only one who said App State could absolutely win that game. He made the argument that App State was used to playing in close games, and had the mental edge in that they weren't afraid and knew how to win in the clutch.

When the game was over, Holtz looked like a prophet, while everyone else was trying to figure out how it happened.
