Are you saying that Eric Chavez is a better defensive 3B than Schmidt? You mean the Eric Chavez who has all of 6 GGs (not that GG is the only standard of defensive excellence or anything). I don't see it.
Most likely once he got in to his 30s Schmidt getting them on reputation so the # is irrelavent

What about Roberto Clemente is over-rated?
A solid hitter thatr hit with reasonable power in cavernous Forbes Field. CLemente had the best arm of ANY outfielder I have ever seen. Ihave watched baseball since 1960.
Clemente was routniely the best hitter of his era is runs produced.
FYI: runs produced is runs scored + RBI - HR.
Any other methodology gives you double credit for HRs.

Most likely? Or did you see him play? After the age of 30, Schmidt was 1st or 2nd in assists by a 3B 6 times. He was also in the top 3 for fewest errors committed by a 3B 5 times after the age of 30.

I think people who don't know baseball all that well will overrate him.

So you fall into the category of people who don't know baseball all that well?

Good point there. He led the league in Assists as an OF 5 times and was 2nd another 4 times. He just wasn't amazing offensively. Mostly a singles hitter.

Bad stats to judge a fielder.

Yep. He also did that in a more pitcher-friendly era.

I feel Mathews should be getting more love in this thread.
I say Schmidt, then Mathews, then Brett. I know A-Rod was mentioned by Dan. If he is part of the 3rd sackers, then he bumps Brett. As a life long Braves fan, it kills me not to put him in the top three. But I don't think he beats out the other guys. Had he not moved to the outfield so Vinny Castilla could play third, his numbers would have been much better. His injury woes began when that happened.

Wrong. Clemente was a gap hitter that hit a lot of doubles and triples..
Forbes Field was huge..
It took a most pop to hit one out of the park...
Several years he lead the NL in Net runs, that is Runs Scored = RBI - HR...
He was much more than a singles hitter.

Ever heard of Eric Chavez?
Dude was a fricking wizard with the glove. Too bad he could not stay healthy.
Eric Chavez played 7 seasons where he played at least 125 games. He won the Gold Glove in six of them (he did not win the first year - probably due to not having a reputation and being in fricking Oakland).
TigerintheNO, I do think you underrate Eddie Mathews. I would definitely have him above Boggs. I am very curious to see where you put ARod on the SS list.
I think I would go Schmidt, Brett, Robinson, Jones, Mathews.

No one has mentioned Ron Cey. This list is a sham!

So? Assists matter for OFers, but all they say about 3Bs is that they played a lot of games. Schmidt was great enough without needing this "stat." I think what's most amazing about Schmidt is that he dropped so many bombs in the 70s/80s when dudes just didn't drop bombs like that.
I never saw him play, but I think Eddie Mathews' numbers have to put him in the conversation with Mike.

Who gives a crap about 3000 hits or any other accumulation stat. Clemente's prime is top 15 in modern baseball. As with all players you need to adjust for era Clemente's era was a very low scoring

My ex boss was Mike Schmidt' s roommate at Ohio U back in the day.

I would put Cey in a level with Ken Boyer.

His moustache alone nearly garners top 5 status.
