He's admitted use for a 2-3 year period.

Where is Pete Rose?

You mean the Pete Rose that played the vast majority of his games in the OF and 1B?

Also, getting back to the OBP conversation on Boggs, Rose had a career OBP of .375 compared to Boggs' .415.

he has said in interviews that he changed his swing and approach that year because Red Sox brass wanted more power out of him. Why he didn't keep it up I guess I don't know.

That would be a good explaination for Boggs but it wasn't just him. Total HRs in MLB were up, way up that year:

85: 3602
86: 3813
87: 4458
88: 3180
89: 3083

IMO Rose is far and away the most over rated player of all time.

I consider A-Rod a shortstop because his peak was at SS and he wasn’t moved due to declining ability. It wasn’t like he couldn’t hack it at short anymore.

I list A-Rod at Shortstop

I think its Clemente, but I can see Rose as well. It's like you're not allowed to criticize certain players.

I don't think Rose is THAT overrated, just because I don't think anyone thinks he is the greatest or anything.

He was just a really, really good player for a really long time.

I still think Jackie Robinson was overrated. But I'm sure I'll get crushed for that.

ARod shouldn't be disqualified for either because of his time at various positions. You can reasonably put him at 3B now in my opinion, or at least you will be able to by the time he is done.

We might want to have a thread at the end where we recognize the best multiple-position players. That way we can give proper credit to those guys.

I had the dad of an ex gf try to tell me pete rose was the best player of all time simply because he had the most hits

I said he wasn't even in the top 30 and he couldn't believe it. It was like I beat up an elderly woman

Actually, I think Jackie Robinson is UNDERrated as a ballplayer. He’s looked at solely as this symbol when he is in the discussion for best 2B ever, save for his shortened career. He really was a five-tool player who could do it all. Speed, power, glove… the whole package.

He's around 25th-30th IMO.

That's about where he falls in all-time WAR. 25th exactly on just hitters. 29th if you throw in the top three pitchers.

This is using Fangraphs WAR.

I think he should get credit for being able to keep on hitting even though he moved all over the field.

He had half his career stolen from him too. Not to mention the physical toll he took from the pressure.
Career avg of .311 and OBP of .409 plus 200 steals in 10 years was a damn good career. Had he gotten to play, say 6 more years at the beginning, he probably would have 2500 hits and 400 SBs.
Brooks Robinson-Was the greatest defensive player in baseball history. While other players (Mays, Griffey, Bench, Smith, & Vizquel) have legit claims on that title, the difference between them and the next best player at their position, isn't as great. 16 straight Gold Gloves and the highest fielding % at the hot corner. He wasn't a slouch at the plate. The 18 time all-star would finish with 268 Hrs & 1357 RBIs. Robinson would win the 1964 MVP and the 1970 WS MVP.
Dukke, sorry but Rose is overrated. He is the Nolan Ryan of hitters.

So we only believe that players in the "steroid era" was guilty of using roids?

Or am I taking your comments completely off track?

Just looks to me as you're just scoffing at the notion that Boggs were ever on roids.
