This is my list finishing out the PGA season and heading into next season.

Tier 1: (Could win majors, and win multiple PGA events a year)
Rory, Spieth, Thomas, C. Smith, Rahm, Scheffler, Xander, Morikawa,

Tier 2: (Need a little more wins or more contention at majors consistently to be at tier 1:)
Cantlay, Hovland, Burns, Hideki, Fitzpatrick, Zalatoris, Finau

Tier 3( Young players that will break through eventually)
Young, Zalatoris.

Dropping down in their level of play:
D. Johnson, Koepka, Dechambeau

I would say he's tier 2 if you compare him to some of the guys in tier 2.

I put him at both.

You are right. He was super close this year. I think he gets one PGA tour win next season, maybe even a major.

Fitzpatrick won a major this year and one of your top tier never has FWIW

True, but Xander has what 6 PGA tour wins to Fitzpatricks 1? And has contended at majors much more consistently than Fitzpatrick.

Move Fitzpatrick to tier 1 and zalatoris to tier 2.

Xander needs a major to get in the first tier fully, but I wouldn’t really debate him being included.

I hear you, I think it’s a matter of time before Xander breaks through as well. Just saying with the way you defined things. Fitzpatrick didn’t have a PGA card until relatively recently as well

Morikawa struggled down the stretch. 195th in total putting, 93rd in total driving and 165th SG ARG. His iron play will keep him relevant but the results in his immediate tour career could be an outlier.

I’m likely wrong.

Should Dustin johnson not at least be in tier 2?

Last two years two top 10s in majors along with a T12 in the masters this year

Sam Burns is having a pretty good year winning 3 times this PGA season. I'd put him in the tier 3 group as an up and coming player who in my opinion will break through and win a major.

I think Morikowa should be out of tier 1 until he gets his cut back

I see 18 guys most weeks that stand out from the pack. Anytime someone from this list doesn’t win a major or even a Tour event with a solid field I consider it a bit of an upset.

Tier 1 (Likely the top 6 on the odds boards at any major championship level course as of today)

Rory, JT, Rahm, Scheffler, Smith, Spieth

Tier 2 (Guys in many different phases of their careers but none are going to sneak up on anybody at a major)

Morikawa, Cantlay, Schauffele, Hovland, Zalatoris, Burns, DJ, Matsuyama, Fitzpatrick, Koepka, Bryson, Lowry

Tier 3 (Guys who haven’t had any real breakthroughs at majors or are badly struggling with form)

Niemann, Fleetwood, Im, Homa, Berger, Finau, Young, Hatton, Reed, Ancer

Morikawa has moved down a tier and Bryson back up a tier for me in the last month or so and Young and Homa have replaced Louis and Rose.

I don’t like your list

Rory, Rahm, Scottie, JT, Cam,

DJ, Vik, Xander, Collin, Spieth, Fitz, Zalatoris,

Tier 3 is just guessing at this point

I would say Cam Young deserves to be mentioned right there at the top also.
Was in it till the end at the PGA, and could have folded today, but made a helluva run to push Smith at the end.

Spieth has worked himself back to right on the fringe of tier 1
2 top 5s and 3 top 10s in the last 8 majors

And he has a couple wins the last two years

Finau does not belong in any of these tiers

He was never close to competing to win this one. Nice back door finish.

I can’t recall him even being in any of the final 3 pairings on a major Sunday recently

Wow, two wins over two years. Puts him in Joel Dahmen territory.
