After failing to see the field while on the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans in 2021, wide receiver Golden Tate is trying his hand at baseball.

The West Coast League announced on Tuesday that Tate has signed a minor-league deal with the Port Angeles Lefties and will make his debut on the same evening, starting in centerfield.

“I am extremely thankful to the West Coast League and the Port Angeles Lefties for allowing me to join their league,” Tate said. “As some might know, I was drafted twice in baseball. As a child, my first love was baseball, so I’m excited about the opportunity to compete against some of the best young players in the league. I look forward to having a lot of fun and exploring baseball more.”

That’s cool. He was a very good player in college. He played more than a decade in the NFL and almost caught 700 passes, but he’s 33 and his career is winding down.

Probably doing something to pass the time for fun. But it’s less of a gimmick than Tracy McGrady pitching for that team in Sugar Land.

If his hand eye baseball skills are there, he has a shot at making noise.
You can't teach quickness and speed..he has both.

I don’t like his chances. He hasn’t played travel ball in years.

Eh, I mean we are only 23 years now from Jim Morris who was a bigger wild card and Tate is still only 33

Apples to Oranges. Morris was a pitcher.

Not shooting at you, TMan.
For the record: Anyone who signs a contract to play baseball for money is playing in the "Pros".
It doesn't have to be MLB. Players in the Minor Leagues - no matter what level - have signed contracts to play baseball for money. That makes them "Pros".
Again, not shooting at you.

In the most technical sense, I suppose playing in the minors is technically a “professional”. But you knew what I meant

He’s never gonna make it onto the roster of a major league team

The West Coast League is a summer collegiate league. So this still doesn’t make him a professional baseball player.

No he doesn't. If he pitched, the MAYBE. As a position player, taking 10+ years off in the hardest sport, by far, to make it to the top level is an impossibility. Good luck to him ever trying to hit a 97 MPH fastball with 20" run, followed by a 83 MPH curve or change-up.

ETA: Can he make some noise in independent ball and maybe low level minor leagues? Sure, but no way that a 33 year old starting up again can make the MLB as a position player.

I don't think he will be heartbroken if he doesnt make it to the majors. 33, and doing what he loves with likely no worries about a paycheck. Living the dream right there.

Yep. Kind of like J.R. Smith now playing college golf for the North Carolina A&T team. It is HIGHLY unlikely he ever makes it to professional level. But does he really care if he doesn't? He has enough money to live the rest of his life on. Now he's just doing something for his own enjoyment.

We should all be so fortunate
