Going forward can you really call college golfers amateurs at the Masters?

With NIL and lots of these guys coming by big time golf schools, they are being paid to play golf.

Amateur golfers can receive endorsements. Recent rule changes by the USGA and R&A have allowed amateur golfers to accept sponsorship money and payments for their name, image, and likeness. This includes compensation for using their name, image, or likeness to promote a product or service.

Question: Are college golfers really getting NIL money?

The guy who won the mid-amateur and is playing this week played professionally on the KFT before regaining amateur status. It's already a bit of a farce.

Yes

Not from collectives, but the top players all have sponsorships from the clothing/club companies and hat/bag sponsor deals.

I think it’s safe to say that Bobby Jones wouldn’t be a fan of the current definition of “Amateur”

This has always been the case. Former professional golfers can apply for Amateur status. I believe former LSU golfer John Peterson was recently granted his amateur status after earning more than $2 mil on professional tours.

The guy that won the mid am this year seems fine to get his status back, he only played in 3 KFT events in his career. Likely never actually made a profit from playing pro golf, but some of these guys are bullshite. You got guys like Gary Nicklaus (yes Jack’s son) who played 123 PGA Tour events getting their am status back.
