Mike Schmidt says Brooks Robinson. At least that’s what he said to me at a charity function back in 1992.
BTW, Mike is certainly in the argument. It starts and stops with these two.

I would say Scott Brosius of all the players that I watched.

But the answer to your question is Graig Nettles

For the World Series, I would NOT want Chipper Jones.

You wouldn’t want a switch hitter that hit .273/.391/.436 in 3 World Series against really good pitching?

In 2 World Series, Schmidt went .220/.283/.390.

So why call out Chipper?

So why call

Chipper Jones

He never needed electronics to be able to know the pitch

I love Chipper—probably my 3rd favorite player of all time. But you don’t get extra points for switch-hitting. Now, it takes a ton of talent and a shite-ton of reps from both sides growing up—gotta start that way before you get to the bigs. But guys do it because it gives them an advantage of always hitting against an opposite handed pitcher. Your numbers are your numbers, you don’t get EXTRA credit for switch hitting. It’s admirable the work he and his father put in to develop him from both sides, but again, it was so he would have an advantage. He wasn’t going up there with 1-hand tied behind his back.

And I’d bet anything he juiced during part of his career(and I don’t care). Why wouldn’t he have? Everybody else was. You don’t have to look like a body-builder to get the benefits. I’d bet Jeter and Griffey did, too. Again, why wouldn’t they? Too much money to leave on the table for the Brett Boones and Marcus Giles of the world to pick up instead of you.

Best all around 3rd baseman- Mike Schmidt
Best Hitting 3rd baseman- My opinion it is George Brett but if you want to put Chipper there, I can't make a huge argumemt agianst it
Best Fielding 3rd baseman- Brooks Robinson

useful assessment
schmidt led national.league in hrs a few times, 2nd a couple.
and gold gloves.

his hr numbers low by comparison to now but eras are different. he was #1 3b for both power and fielding for many years.
