DENVER -- George Karl led the Denver Nuggets to a team-record 57 wins without a big name on his roster.

For that endeavor, Karl earned the NBA's Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

He received 62 first-place votes, followed by Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat with 24 votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters. New York's Mike Woodson finished third and San Antonio's Gregg Popovich, who won the award last season, was fourth.

George Karl won his first NBA Coach of the Year award after his 25th season as a head coach. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that is the most seasons coached before winning the award for the first time in NBA history.

Personally, I think Mark Jackson or PJ Carlesimo should have won.

East Coast bias can't even be an explanation here because Karl won. i have no idea how he wasn't up there. he certainly deserved it for the season his team had. nobody expected that.

The Nets more than doubled their wins from last year, started strong, finished strong, and got a 4th seed. In my opinion, PJ should have won COY by a wide margin.

Or Lionel Hollins.

How many of these teams lost one of their top 3 players in the middle of the season and still won 54 games?

No

Tons of talent on that team in a weak conference. Then taken out by the Bulls.

people were predicting Karl to win coach of the year before the season started. most had the nuggets as a decent seed in the playoffs. barely anyone predicted the warriors to make the playoffs.
