I still really like Lando, but this year he has kind of come off abrasive and maybe shown a side of himself that isn't as likable.
In comparison to other drivers it is extremely tame though.

Man that was crazy, feel so bad for Lando. I don't blame him for staying out, just sometimes you come up short

Seems like Gio may not have had radio for the entire race.

I don’t feel bad for him. He acted an arse and was arrogant. This coming after he already destroyed one car in the rain. Couldn’t handle the pressure of leading a race. His team should have told him heavier rain was coming and maybe they had or decided not when he pitched an absolute fit over the radio.

He took a risk and it didn't work out, his team should have made it clear that the heavy stuff was coming, but leading with 3 to go, I see why he made the choice he did.

I personally think it’s kind of equal. They asked him how it was out there knowing more rain is coming and let him go on. Hamilton wanted to go on as well, but his team told him to come in. Mclaren should’ve done the same even if he pitched a fit

Bottas throwing a little shade

quote:A very sobering lesson for the entire team, for certain. That said, the question to be asked is, if McLaren had him come to the pit, would you have trusted that Hamilton would have come in, or that he stayed out and banked on his skills to win without making the pit stop? Tough position to be in. Had the roles been reversed, and they had been in the #2 position instead of #1 and only 2 seconds behind, had Hamilton bypassed the pit, would they have made the call to pick and change tires? In my opinion, it would have been their only chance to win. They gambled and lost. Lewis had the advantage of seeing their open deck of cards.

Agree with this, I don’t fault McLaren or Norris for staying out at all, and had Lando dived into the pits I’m not certain Hamilton would’ve done the same and not just risked it himself. They were in the battle for perhaps 2 wins in a row since who knows when, and regardless of today’s result they are MILES ahead of where they were just 2 years ago, easily the most improved team in that span. They gambled and lost, sucks for them but they should still hold their heads high, they’re on a good path.

This will be a huge learning lesson for the team and Lando. It was a team effort that failed them. Danny Ric was about to get the same treatment, but he spoke up.
The team had more info than the drivers this time around and they need to know when they are in that situation. It takes the driver trusting the team as well, or even the team trusting themselves enough to make that call to bring him in.

Lando made the right call from his position, imo. His team fricked up. Lando is there to win, and dude went for it. He wanted that win so badly. Had I been in his position, I'm making the same call. However, his team had information he didn't have, and they should have made him come in. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at a radar.

He told them to shut up. They probably shouldn’t have listened, but he played it all wrong. You can’t yell at your team on the radio to shut up and then whine they didn’t give you all the information.
Lewis probably still pits because he is chasing a championship and wouldn’t have been in position to take as big of a risk as McLaren let Lando take.

Are we still waiting to hear if Lando will be penalized for crossing the pit line or did the stewards think it was accidental and he had been penalized enough for staying out?
Edit - I should have just googled before asking. He got a reprimand but no penalty.

Did he wine that he didn't get all the information? I didn't see any post race interviews.
It's not uncommon for a driver to tell his engineer to stfu, especially in difficult times. It's not like he has a mute button. They can always buzz him and tell him he has to pit to win this race. Someone above him in the organization has to make that call, and they didn't.
I think most drivers in his position would have made the same call. Look at Hamilton. He told his team to pound sand when he passed the pits, but they eventually convinced him to come in.

“Obviously, unhappy, devastated in a way. We made the call to stay out. We stand by that call. Of course, it was wrong at the end of the day. I made the decision just as much as the team. In fact, it was more that they thought I should box, and I decided to stay out. So, it was my decision. I thought it was the way to go.”
quote:
“From one lap to the other, the whole thing changed, the game changed completely. “That final lap when I boxed, the slick tyre was still the tyre to be on. On that lap, they asked, ‘do you want to go onto the inter?’ and from the lap I just did, I didn’t because the slick was easily the correct tyre. “Of course, now that’s the wrong decision. But this is my feeling I had. “I didn’t know there was going to be a lot, lot more rain. And there’s no way of me knowing unless they tell me there’s going to be a lot more rain, which they didn’t.”
