I recall the Albon choice seemingly being pretty out of nowhere at the time. However, his performance the rest of the year in the RB far exceeded the results gasly produced the first half of the year in the same car.

Does Mercedes just have such superior cars / tech over the rest of the field? There is such a gap between those two and the field every week. RB is the only one occasionally in the rear view.

Yeah, Merc has had the best car every year for the past several. They added a dual axis system (DAS) this year that no one else has or can implement in time for this year. It allows them to alter the toe of the tires mid-lap, letting them adjust for maximum performance on straights and corners.
