Happy for Checo, he was too good to not have a seat next year

Max would wipe the floor with any driver available to Red Bull at the moment.

I don’t think it’s so much about Checo trying to be better than Max. We know Max is a major talent. But Checo will be competitive in that car and will put more pressure on the Mercs than just Max alone.

Fair point, I don't disagree. Perhaps wipe the floor was to harsh but I don't think Sergio will be a major improvement.

2020
Max 214 pts
Sergio 125pts (sat two races but lucked into a win)
Albon 105pts

Max beat his teammate by 109pts. My guess is he still beats Checo by 70-80 pts.

For reference, in 2018
Max 249
Ricciardo 170

That's 79 points and I think Ricciardo is better than Checo.

BWT ? RB. RB is easily a step ahead in all categories as a team & manufacturers. PER is now behind the wheel of a contender not the leader of the middle pack.

In 2018, RIC had 2 P1 finishes and 8 DNFs. VES had 2 P1 finishes, total of 11 podiums, and 4 DNFs.

I think PER has more consistency to complete races so the DNFs won't be as high. You throw in a much more competent driver, I think we will finally see a 4th that can contend for the podium carousel (HAM/VES/BOT/PEZ)

Spot on, Red Bull needs a solid number two, they need someone to be in the Mercedes pit window and pester the shite out of them and make life difficult. Alex did a terrible job of that, will Perez fit that bill? Time will tell.

Yeah, Perez did well this year in a year old Merc, but I wouldn't bet the house on him taming that bull just yet. Maybe the car is just a mother to driver and Verstappen has had Alonso type talent ala that Renault.

Glad to see Sergio in a ride for next year. Imagine Covid plays into next season so it will still be silly for the first few months of next season.

I don't know how I missed the Checo to Red Bull news.

Checo is not as talented as Max but he is really great at tire management. Max with the undercut and Checo with the overcut on Merc.

F1 dealings:

Toto confirmed for the next 3 years

Ineos purchases 1/3 of Merc... New partnership is 1/3 Daimler, 1/3 Toto, 1/3 Ineos

Ineos is bringing $$$$ to help pay HAMs contract... probably just a 1 year deal

Horner revealed Perez was their main target, although he thinks Hulk should have a F1 ride

Mazepin to remain with HAAS for 2021

Ferrari will build HAAS (and other customer team) facility in Maranello with the expectation some Ferrari team members will switch over to HAAS... it will remain a separate operation

That's a bad move on Haas' part. I get the money, but you are going to have so much hate thrown at your team and it's a stain on their reputation.

Does Mercedes have something similar?

Yeah...it was easy to cheer for Haas with Gros and Mags as they were kind of like the gang who could not shoot straight...both seemed like good guys.

Schumacher you know is going to learn and move on, which is fine.

But Maz is just especially when you could have Hulk. Imagine a back of the pack fights between Hulk and Kimi...

Mazepin is probably setting himself up to buy the team next year or so and Gene knows that is a good option to have.

I've got no off track feelings towards Mazepin, seems like a rich kid a-hole, but it seems people are being irrational just because they don't want another pay driver.

Lewis to be Knighted.

Does he push the team to note him as Sir Lewis now?

Danny Ric was asked about that and had a humorous interview

youtube

I wonder how the Jackie Stewart knighting went. Not sure if he was still racing when he got his.

Looks like he wasn't knighted until 2001, so long after his driving career.

While not the youngest knighthood (Andy Murray), Hamilton is getting it pretty early in life compared to most people.

I think unwritten protocol is to address him as Sir Lewis and for him to say, "Just call me Lewis" and for everyone to go on as normal.

I would imagine he wouldn't want to be addressed as Sir Lewis, but he will use the title for marketing.

Cyril out at Renault/Alpine

Also, when should the 2021 season thread start?
